(Nov. 13) EMORY ELIMINATED FROM NCAA TOURNAMENT
Emory University was eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament, losing to the University of Puget Sound (WA), 2-0.

The Loggers, ranked eighth nationally, struck in the 41st minute, when Elizabeth Pittman's corner kick was headed into the goal by Megan Shivers.  In the 75th minute, Adrienne Folsom put the game out of reach for the Eagles, scoring an unassisted goal.

Puget Sound goalkeeper Erin Williams recorded her second shutout of the tournament.  The Loggers have not allowed a goal since September 10th of this season.

Senior Amy Franciscovich played her final game in goal for the Eagles, making eight saves.  She finishes her Emory career with the third lowest Goals Against Average in school history.

The Eagles finish the season with a 13-3-2 record, four less losses than they had in the previous season.  This is the second straight year the Eagles have been eliminated in the tournament's round of 32, and the third time in the past four years.


(Nov. 12) EAGLES ADVANCE TO SECOND ROUND ON GOLDEN GOAL
Emory University (13-2-2) defeated the University of the South (Tenn.) 1-0, in the first overtime period of the game.

For the second time this season, the Tigers and the Eagles finished regulation scoreless.  In the previous meeting, two overtime periods were not enough to decide the game, which ended in a tie. 

On Saturday, after 90 more minutes of scoreless play, Eagle forward Nancy Wilson scored the lone goal of the game on a breakaway in the 93rd minute of the game. 

For Wilson, a senior, the goal is her third "golden goal" her sixth game-winning goal this season.  Wilson has scored the game-winning goal for Emory in each of its last three games.  She leads the team with seven goals and 16 points this season.

Amy Franciscovich recorded her ninth shutout of the season.  Franciscovich entered the game ranked 15th in the nation in goals against average.  Her counterpart Tayloe Steedman started the game just ahead of her, ranked 14th in the nation.

In the 57th minute of the game, Franciscovich made a game-saving stop, diving to her right to prevent a hard shot off the leg of Becky Gaddis from entering the net.

Emory, ranked 20th in the nation, will play the winner of Maryville College and The University of Puget Sound in the second round of the tournament.  The game will take place Sunday, October 13th at 5:00 PM.


(Nov. 7) EMORY TO HOST NCAA DIVISION III SOCCER MATCHES
The Emory women's soccer team has been selected to participate in the NCAA Division III women's soccer tournament. The Eagles will also play host to first and second round matches, Nov. 12-13 at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

Head coach Sue Patberg and her squad will open the tournament against the University of the South on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. The winner of the match plays the winner of the Maryville College (Tenn.) and University of Puget Sound (Wash.) match Sunday at 5:00 p.m.

This marks the ninth overall apperance in the tournament for the Eagles and second consecutive. Emory will also be hosting for the fourth time in program history. Emory previously hosted in 1995, 2000 and 2002.


(Nov. 5) EAGLES WIN SEASON FINALE OVER CARNEGIE
Emory University finished its regular season with a 2-1 victory over University Athletic Association rival Carnegie Mellon University (PA).

The Eagles entered the second half of the game trailing 1-0.  Four minutes into the half, Jillian Brady struck with her second goal of the season, with assists from Amy Bedford and Alison English.

Nancy Wilson scored the game-winning goal for the Eagles in the 67th minute of the game after receiving a pass from Gail Bus and Joyce Lamb.  Wilson finishes the regular season leading the team with six goals and 14 points.  The senior has five game-winning goals this season.

The Eagles improve to 5-2-0 in conference play and to 12-2-2 overall this season.  The at-large bids for the NCAA Division III tournament will be announced late Sunday night.


(Oct. 30) EMORY EDGES CASE WESTERN RESERVE 1-0
The 20th-ranked Emory women's soccer team rebounded from Friday's loss to No. 6 Rochester with a 1-0 victory over Case Western Reserve on the road in Cleveland, Ohio.

Senior co-captain Nancy Wilson scored the game's only goal at 64:08 off a breakaway. She was assisted on the goal by Julia Sanders.

The Eagles outshot the Spartans 15-2, with the Emory offense taking nine shots on goal compared to just one for Case.

Emory returns to action next Saturday when it plays host to Carnegie Mellon at 3:30 p.m., to close out the 2005 regular season.


(Oct. 28) EMORY FALLS TO ROCHESTER 1-0
The 20th-ranked Emory women's soccer team fell to No. 16 University of Rochester 1-0 in Rochester, N.Y.

The lone goal in the game was scored in the 89th minute. Amy Franciscovich had five saves for the Eagles.

Emory returns to action Sunday when it plays Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.


(Oct. 23) EAGLES BLANK GREENSBORO 5-0
Senior co-captin Nancy Wilson scored two goals to lead the 22nd-ranked Emory Eagles to a 5-0 non-conference victory over Greensboro College in Greensboro on Sunday.

The blue and gold led 4-0 at the half thanks to a pair of goals by Wilson to open the contest. She scored 46 seconds into the match before adding her second at 18:48. Both goals were unassisted. Freshman Joyce Lam added another goal at 20:05 before senior Amy Bedford scored the final goal of the half at 41:45 to give Emory a commanding 4-0 lead.

The Eagles other senior co-captain, Lauren Hudak, found the back of the goal at 54:51 to give Emory its fifth goal where the score would stay. She was assisted on the goal by Lam.

For the match Emory outshot Greensboro 33-0, continuing the team's solid defensive play for the season. The Eagles also had 13 corner kicks compared to zero for The Pride.

The 5-0 shut-out marked the Eagles 10th of the season under first-year head coach Sue Patberg. Emory (10-1-2) returns to conference play when it travels to Rochester, N.Y., to face 17th-ranked University of Rochester, Friday at 7:30 p.m.


(Oct. 18) EMORY MOVES BACK INTO THE TOP 25
The Emory Eagles have moved back into the NSCAA/adidas Division III top 25 after two overtime victories against University Athletic Association opponents.

The Eagles are ranked No. 22 in the nation following 1-0 wins over New York University and Brandeis University, each on golden goals by Nancy Wilson.

This week's poll equal's the team's previous high ranking, in the poll released October 4. The Eagles fell out of the top 25 for one week after a 3-1 loss to No. 17 Chicago.

The next game for the Eagles will be Sunday at Greensboro College (N.C.).


(Oct. 16) WILSON SCORES ANOTHER GOLDEN GOAL, EMORY BEATS BRANDEIS 1-0
Nancy Wilson scored the golden goal for the second straight game Sunday to give the Emory Eagles the 1-0 overtime win over the Brandeis (Mass.) Judges.

The Eagles outshot the Judges 32 to 8 including 11 shots on goal, but could not finish until Wilson got in behind the defense for a one-on-one in the 99th minute.

Amy Franciscovich recorded five saves and earned the shutout for the Eagles, her third in a row and seventh of the season.

The Eagles controlled play for much of the first half, but the first good chance of the half was for the Judges. Nickey Guertin received the ball in the 37th minute unmarked at the corner of the six-yard box. She tried to slot the ball past Franciscovich low on the near post, but Franciscovich knocked the ball away with her foot.

The best chance for the Eagles came as Lauren Hudak chased a through ball into the box in the 43rd minute. She rocketed a shot that hit the charging goalie in the head. The ball bounced to Amy Bedford at the top of the penalty box whose shot was cleared off the line by a Brandeis defender.

The Eagles had most of the chances in the second half as Wilson sent three consecutive open looks sailing over the crossbar.

The Eagles had another great chance as Gail Bush received a through pass at the top of the 18-yard box. Bush took a step into the box and fired a shot, but it was directly at the keeper who saved it easily.

As regulation ended at 0-0, the Eagles went to their fifth overtime in twelve games this season.

Neither team had put a shot on goal, as the game entered the end of the first overtime period.

In the 99th minute Jessie Dean received the goal kick from Franciscovich and lobbed it in over the last Brandeis defender. Wilson slipped in past the last man and trapped the ball on the bounce. Wilson fired the shot far post into the side netting to end the game.

The goal was her second of the year; the first came on Friday as the overtime winner against New York University. The assist for Dean tied her for the lead on the team in assists and points with four and ten, respectively.

With the win the Eagles improve to 9-1-2 on the season with a 3-1-0 University Athletic Association conference record. The Eagles undefeated in overtime this season with a 3-0-2 record.

The Eagles' next game will be next Saturday at Greensboro College (N.C.).


(Oct. 14) WILSON SCORES GOLDEN GOAL IN 1-0 WIN OVER NYU
Team captain Nancy Wilson scored the golden goal for the Emory Eagles Friday, giving them a 1-0 overtime win over conference foe New York University.

Senior Amy Franciscovich earned the shutout for the Eagles, her seventh of the year and the ninth for the Eagle defense.

Emory took 20 shots in the game putting seven on goal, but neither team came close until the second half.

In the 85th minute a corner kick by Jessie Dean was met in front of the goal by Alexa Wahr who put a shot on the goal that was cleared off the line by an NYU player. The Eagles were unable to capitalize on the rebound and neither team put another shot on goal in regulation.

In the first overtime period in the 93rd minute, Nancy Wilson received a throw-in from Jillian Brady. Wilson turned and fired from 25 yards out. The shot went into the upper left corner giving the Eagles the sudden death victory.

The win for the Eagles gives them a 8-1-2 record with a 2-1-0 record in University Athletic Association play. The Eagles are third in conference standings.

The Eagles host Brandeis University (MA) on Sunday in another conference match. Emory is undefeated in their last 10 home matches dating back to last season including nine wins.


(Oct. 8) EMORY FALLS 3-1 IN CHICAGO
The 22nd- ranked Emory women's soccer team fell to 17th- ranked University of Chicago by a score of 3-1. With the loss the Eagles are 7-1-2 and 1-1-0 in conference play.

Sophomore Kristine Falk scored the only Eagle goal at 8 minutes into the first half. Amy Franciscovich recorded a total of five saves in the game.

The Eagles look to get back on the winning track, Friday, Oct. 14, when they host New York University. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Woodruff P.E. Center.


(Oct. 1) EMORY SHUTS OUT WASH U. 1-0
The undefeated Emory Eagles beat Washington University (MO) 1-0 in Saturday's homecoming match to start the University Athletic Association conference play.

Sophomore Kristine Falk scored in the 70th minute to give the Eagles the lead, while the Eagles defense allowed only three shots in the game, the fifth time this season they have allowed three or fewer shots.

Amy Franciscovich earned the shutout, her fifth of the season, and recorded one save. Franciscovich faced just one shot on goal in her fifth shutout of the season, the eighth shutout for the team.

The first half started slowly with neither team taking a shot in the first 11 minutes and no shots on goal until the 29th minute. The two teams combined for just four shots in the first half.

Emory's offense started to get things going after the break taking 11 shots in the second half.

In the 70th minute Lauren Hudak controlled the ball in the middle of the field at the top of the penalty box. Hudak poked the ball through to Falk giving her a one-on-one with the keeper. Falk chipped the ball over the charging keeper into the goal for her first goal of the year.

The assist from Hudak was her team leading fourth of the season.

Emory is 7-0-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. The Eagles next match will be a conference contest with the University of Chicago next Saturday in Chicago.


(Sept. 25) WOMEN'S SOCCER EDGES RHODES 2-1 IN OVERTIME
Emory's 25th-ranked women's soccer team spotted Rhodes College a 1-0 lead before fighting back to take a 2-1 overtime win.

The contest saw Rhodes score first, which marked the first time this season an Emory opponent has scored.

It remained 1-0 for the rest of the first half and much of the second until Leanna Racine scored with five minutes remaining to tie the score.

The two teams went into overtime when Jessie Dean served the ball to Lauren Hudak who scored the golden goal on a header two minutes into overtime to give the Eagles the victory.

Emory, now 6-0-2 on the season opens conference play against Washington University at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. first at the Woodruff P.E. Center as part of Homecoming. Admission is free to the public.


(Sept. 23) EMORY PLAYS TO SCORELESS DRAW WITH UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH
The 25th ranked Emory Eagles tied the Unversity of the South Tigers (Tenn.) 0-0 Friday. The Eagles (5-0-2) have yet to allow a goal this season.

Amy Franciscovich had four saves for the Eagles in the shutout, her fourth of the season.

The Eagles shot 15 times only managing to get three on target. This is the second time this season the Eagles have been held scoreless.

The Eagles be in action on Sunday as they travel to Rhodes College (Tenn.) The next home game will be Saturday, October 1 at 2:30 p.m. in the homecoming match against Washington University (Mo.). The game with Washington will be the first conference match for the Eagles.


(Sept. 20) DEAN SCORES TWO IN 50 SECONDS; EMORY 3-0 OVER OGLETHORPE
Jessie Dean scored two goals in 50 seconds Tuesday to lead the Emory University women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Oglethorpe University.

The Eagles (5-0-1) shot 24 times, putting eight on net, while allowing only two shots by the Stormy Petrels (1-4-1). The Eagles have not allowed a goal all season.

After 11 minutes without a shot on goal by either team, Jessie Dean struck a shot off the inside of the left post. The Oglethorpe keeper did not even attempt at the ball as it slipped in behind her. Lauren Hudak assisted on the goal and is tied for the team lead with three this season.

Just 50 seconds later, Adrienne DeMarais made a through pass to Dean in open space just inside the penalty area. Dean deposited the ball into the goal for her team-leading third goal of the year.

Emory took a 2-0 lead into the half. The Eagles have led at the half in all five of their wins this season.

Adrienne DeMarais added another goal for the Eagles on a corner kick. Kristine Falk received the corner kick from Dean and centered the ball to DeMarais. DeMarais knocked a header past the keeper to give the Eagles the 3-0 lead. With the assist, Dean leads the Eagles with nine points in six games this season.

Amy Franciscovich and Sarah Wilkerson split time in the goal each playing a half. Franciscovich faced no shots but was the keeper of record and is 5-0-1 on the season. Wilkerson faced just two shots, neither on goal, and had one save off the foot of a teammate. Dating back to last season the Eagle defense has not allowed a goal in regulation in nine games.

The Eagles are ranked 25th in the nation in the NSCAA/adidas Division III rankings and will host the University of the South (Tenn.) on Friday night at 5 p.m. at the Woodruff P.E. Center. The Eagles have a seven game winning streak at home dating back to last October.


(Sept. 16) WOMEN'S SOCCER BLANKS KENYON COLLEGE 3-0
Led by senior Lauren Hudak's two goals, the 24th-ranked Emory women's soccer team blanked Kenyon College of Ohio 3-0. The keeps Emory undefeated on the year at 4-0-1.

Hudak opened the scoring a little under 10 minutes into the contest off an assist from freshman Alexa Wahr. She added her second goal of the contest with 19 minutes remaining in the first half off an assist from Jessie Dean to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead heading into the locker room.

Gail Bush gave EU another goal at the 4:01 mark in the second half for the final goal of the game. Emory out-shot Kenyon 16-2. Senior goalie Amy Franciscovich continued her solid play, logging all 90 minutes in goal and recording two saves.

Emory hosts cross-town rival Oglethorpe, Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free to the public.


(Sept. 14) WOMEN'S SOCCER DEBUTS IN LATEST NSCAA/ADIDAS DIVISION III TOP 25
The Emory women's soccer team made its 2005 debut in the latest NSCAA/adidas Division III top 25 rankings at No. 24. The Eagles, who also rank fourth in the south region, stand 3-0-1 on the season.

Sue Patberg's squad recently returned from up-state New York where they won the Mayors Cup at SUNY Oneonta. EU's first game saw it defeat Hartwick College 3-0, before finishing in a scoreless tie with 23rd-ranked Oneonta. The Eagles won the Mayor's Cup thanks to combined goals scored for the tournament.

The Eagles return home to the Woodruff P.E. Center for a match against Kenyon College of Ohio, Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free to the public.


(Sept. 10) EMORY WINS MAYOR'S CUP AFTER SCORELESS TIE WITH ONEONTA
The Emory women's soccer claimed the Mayor's Cup after playing to a scoreless tie against host school Oneonta College. The Eagles took the title on goal differential for the entire tournament. First round action saw Emory defeat Hartwick College 3-0.

Oneonta out-shot Emory 17-8 with five shots on goal compared to four for the Eagles. Senior goalie Amy Franciscovich turned in an outstanding effort for the match, recording five saves. Sophomores Jamie English had two shots on goal, while senior Nancy Wilson and junior Jessie Dean also recorded shots for EU.

Up next for the Eagles a home match against Kenyon College. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Woodruff P.E. Center.


(Sept. 9) EMORY REMAINS UNDEFEATED WITH WIN OVER HARTWICK COLLEGE
The Emory women's soccer team remained undefeated on the season with a 3-0 victory over Hartwick College of New York as part of the Mayor's Cup. With the win the Eagles move to 3-0-0 on the season.

Amy Bedford opened the scoring for Emory at the 26:37 mark of the first half. Bedford's goal came off an assist from Gail Bush. Emory kept the lead at 1-0 throughout the first half and into intermission.

The second half saw Head Coach Sue Patberg's squad open with intense play and tack on a pair of goals to put another game in the win column for the defending UAA champions. Adrienne DeMarais scored on an assist from Jamie English 10 minutes into the second half. A little over a minute had gone by when English bettered her assist with a goal of her own. English scored the goal off an assist from her sister Alison.

Up next for the Eagles is Oneonta College (N.Y.) Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.


(Sept. 3) EAGLES CLAIM EMORY SOCCER CLASSIC TITLE
The Emory women's soccer team defended its home turf and blasted Clark University 4-0 on its way to the Emory Soccer Classic title. The win improves the Eagles to 2-0-0 on the season. The Eagles dominated the offensive end, out-shooting the Cougars 20-3.

Emory opened the scoring with sophomore Gail Bush scoring off an assist from freshman Joyce Lam to take a 1-0 lead, where the score would remain through the half.

With Emory continuing to apply pressure Clark finally gave in with Emory scoring three goals the final 32 minutes of the contest. Freshman Alexa Wahr scored her first collegiate goal with 32 minutes to play to up the count to 2-0. After recording an assist in the first half Joyce Lam got into the scoring column at the 17:46 mark with a goal off an assist from senior Alison English and senior Lauren Hudak. Hudak recorded another assist for the game two minutes later as sophomore Jamie English notched the final goal for the Eagles to give them the 4-0 victory.

The Eagles take the week off before traveling to New York next weekend to face Hartwick College on Friday and Oneonta College on Saturday.


(Sept. 2) WOMEN'S SOCCER TAKES 2-0 VICTORY OVER ROANOKE COLLEGE
The Sue Patberg era opened on a high note for Emory University's women's soccer team with a 2-0 victory over the Roanoke College Maroons as part of the Emory Soccer Classic.

Thanks to an aggressive offense, the Eagles opened the match pressuring the Roanoke defense. The ball rarely crossed into the Emory defense and with 29:45 to go in the first half freshman Jillian Brady notched her first career goal off an assist from sophomore Jessie Dean to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

The two teams continued to battle in the second half until the 28:45 mark when Dean upped Emory's lead to 2-0 off an assist from fellow sophomore Jamie English. Dean ended the night the star for Emory, recording a goal and an assist.

Emory is back in action Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against Clark University of Massachussetts at 7:30 p.m.. Clark took a 1-0 overtime decision over Oglethorpe University in the first game of tonight's double-header. Oglethorpe and Roanoke will take to the field at 5:00. Admission is free to the public.


(July 28) SUE PATBERG NAMED WOMEN'S SOCCER COACH
Sue Patberg has been named women's soccer coach at Emory University, effective August 1. Most recently, Patberg has been the head coach of the U.S. Under-16 Women's National Team. She served as head coach at the University of Georgia from 1999-2004 and was named Big Ten Coach of the Year twice while head coach at the University of Minnesota from 1993-99.

"I am pleased to add Sue to the ranks of our outstanding coaching staff at Emory," said Betsy Stephenson, Director of Athletics. "Under her leadership, the women's soccer team at Georgia had one of the top graduation rates and highest team GPAs annually among UGA teams. Sue has played and coached at a high level with the U.S. National team program, which are impressive accomplishments. Sue brings with her a commitment to academic and athletic excellence, which at the heart of Emory's athletic tradition."

During her tenure at UGA, the women's soccer team compiled an overall record of 49-45-9 and made two trips to the NCAA Tournament, advancing twice to the second round. While at the University of Minnesota, her teams compiled a record of 97-42-9, appeared in five consecutive NCAA Tournaments from 1995-99, and earned two Big Ten Championships. She also coached at The Colorado College from 1991-93 where she led her team to the Final Four of the Division I NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.

She was named as the 2004 Soccer Federation Developmental Coach of the Year by the U.S. Olympic Committee and was a member of the NCAA Women's Soccer National Committee from 1998-2002. About her new position, Patberg said "I am extremely excited to be part of such a prestigious academic institution and an athletic program that prides itself on success. I look forward to working with a highly-motivated group of young women and coaching an exciting style of soccer."

Emory is a member of the University Athletic Association, a conference of eight leading universities committed to academic and athletic excellence. Members include Brandeis, Carnegie Mellon, Case Western NYU, University of Chicago, University of Rochester, and Washington University in St. Louis.

The Emory women's soccer program has made eight NCAA Division III Championship appearances since 1993, five times making it to the "Sweet 16." The program has earned University Athletic Association conference titles in 1994, 1998, 2000, and 2004. Student-athletes from 13 states were members of the 2004 women's soccer team.

Patberg received a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1989 where she played collegiate soccer.
