2009 Emory Women's Soccer Season Recap

2009 Emory Women's Soccer Season Recap

With a strong finish to the season, the Emory University women’s soccer earned its 21st-consecutive winning campaign, finishing 2009 with an 8-5-5 record.

Despite losing six of their top-eight scorers (accounting for 29 goals and 72 points) and their starting goalkeeper from the 2008 season, the Eagles mix of new and returning talent was able to gel towards the end of the season.  Emory won each of its final four games of the season, defeating its opponents by a combined score of 12-2 during that stretch.

Emory won its final two University Athletic Association (UAA) games of the season, finishing sixth in the conference with a 2-3-2 record.  The Eagles faced three teams ranked in the top-13 in Division III during conference play, including a 1-1 tie against then 13th-ranked Washington University (Mo.), the eventual National Runners-Up.

The Eagles’ five ties during the season, four of which came in home matches, were the second in school history only to the 1998 season, when the squad recorded six ties.  Emory also put together an eight-match undefeated streak from September 5th through October 4th, going 4-0-4 during the stretch.

Emory senior Talia Dweck set the school’s single-season record for assists during the campaign, notching 12 helpers during the year to break the previous record of 11, held by former Eagles Carrie Eckenhoff (2001) and Joyce Lam (2007).  Her 0.67 assists per game was the 14th-best mark among all Division III players.  Dweck also finished the season with a team-best 16 points, and a perfect two-for-two in penalty kicks.  Dweck earned all-South Atlantic Region and all-UAA honors for her efforts during the season.

Junior Melanie Levy was named to the all-UAA team as well, after leading the team with six goals, including three game winners, and matching Dweck’s 16 points.  Junior Meghan McMahon was also a double-digit scorer for the Eagles, notching five goals (including a pair of game winners) and one assist for 11 points.  Freshman Erica Stein emerged as the Eagles’ top goalkeeper during the season, starting the final five games of the season and allowing just three goals during the stretch.
