Emory University seniors Emily Rubin and
Sara Belsole were each named to the ESPN the
Magazine Academic all-District team for their performances on
the field and in the classroom. In addition, freshman
Kelly Costopoulos was named the UAA Offensive
Player of the Week, based on her performance during two Emory games
last weekend.
Rubin earned a spot on the Academic all-District first team for the
second-consecutive year. This was the first Academic
all-District honor for Belsole, who was named to the third
team.
Rubin has been one of the top defenders in the region this season,
helping the team record a 0.50 goals-against average this season,
which was the 13th-best mark among NCAA Division III
teams at the start of last week. In addition, she has scored
three goals this season, two of which have been game winners, and
added on two assists for eight total points, a career-best
mark. Last season, Rubin was an honorable mention to the
all-UAA team. The biology and business major has a 3.87 grade
point average while at Emory.
Belsole has been one of Emory’s top scorers this season,
recording four goals and two assists for 10 total points.
Earlier in the season, she scored a hat trick against Agnes Scott
College, the first three-goal game by an Eagle in over three
years. She also assisted on the game-winning goal during the
Eagles’ overtime win against then third-ranked Lynchburg
College. Belsole, a journalism and English major, has a GPA
of 3.76.
Voting for the Academic All-District team is conducted by the
College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Emory
nominees represent the "college division" in District 3 which is
composed of NCAA Division II and III, and NAIA schools in the
states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and
Virginia.
By virtue of earning a spot on the Academic All-District first
team, Rubin will be placed on the ballot for the ESPN the
Magazine Academic All-America team, scheduled to be released
on Tuesday, November 16th.
In addition, freshman Kelly Costopoulos was named the University
Athletic Association’s (UAA) Offensive Player of the Week for
women’s soccer after scoring two goals, including a
‘golden goal,’ against a pair of conference opponents
last weekend. On Sunday afternoon, Costopoulos led Emory to a
2-1 victory in overtime against Case Western Reserve University,
scoring the ‘golden goal’ just a minute and 12 seconds
in the first overtime period. On Friday, she notched the only
goal of the Eagles’ 1-1 double-overtime tie against the
24th-ranked University of Rochester, scoring in the
59th minute of the contest to give Emory a 1-0 lead at
the time. Costopoulos, who has come off the bench in all 17
Emory games this season, is second on the squad in both goals
(five) and points (11).
This was the second time in the last three weeks that Costopoulos
has been named the UAA Offensive Player of the Week. It marks
the sixth time this season that an Emory player has been named the
UAA Athlete of the Week.
The seventh-ranked Eagles, who are 13-1-3 this season, will wrap up
their regular season on Sunday, November 7th at Carnegie
Mellon University at 11:00 AM.
