Emory’s Emily Rubin Selected to the Academic All-America Third Team

Emory’s Emily Rubin Selected to the Academic All-America Third Team

Emory University senior defender Emily Rubin was named to the Academic All-America Women’s Soccer Third Team, presented by ESPN, for her efforts both on the field of play and in the classroom during her collegiate career.

Rubin was recently named an honorable mention to the all-University Athletic Association for the second-consecutive year, after helping the Emory defense record a 0.473 goals-against average, the 15th-lowest mark among Division III teams this season.  She was the only senior on the Eagles backline, which also notched 10 shutouts during the campaign and held opponents to an average of 3.7 shots on goal per game.  In addition, Rubin scored a program-record three penalty kick goals, two of which were game winners, and added two assists.

Academically, Rubin has compiled a 3.87 grade point average as a Business and Biology major.  She has earned academic all-UAA honors twice, including earlier this season.

Rubin is the first member of the Emory women’s soccer program to be named an Academic all-American since former Eagle and current assistant coach Emily Fedeles earned the honor after the 2007 season.  She is the fifth member of the women’s soccer program to win the award, joining former Eagles Fedeles, Andrea Pawliczek (1999, 2000, 2001), Annie Schenck (2000, 2001) and Amy Carter (1997).  Rubin was also the only UAA player selected to any of the three teams.

To be eligible for the Academic all-America honor, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.

Emory athletes are selected as part of the ‘College Division’ which represents NCAA Division II and III athletes, in addition to NAIA participants.
