Emory University senior Sara Belsole recorded
the first hat-trick by an Eagle in over three years, helping the
team to a 7-0 win over Agnes Scott College on Wednesday night at
the Woodruff P.E. Center.
Belsole scored two goals within a minute of each other in the first
half, starting at the 30:30 mark. She added her third early
in the second half, scoring unassisted off a steal and a
breakaway.
The hat-trick was the 33rd in school history, and the
first since former Eagle Jamie English accomplished the feat on
September 16, 2007 against the University of the South.
Belsole is now Emory’s leading scorer with 10 points this
season, and is tied for the team lead with four goals during the
campaign.
Freshman Clare Mullins got the scoring started for
Emory, notching a pair of goals in the 11th and
30th minutes for her first collegiate scores. She
would then assist on Belsole’s first goal of the game.
Senior Lauren Smith and junior Lidija
Barauskas would also add goals for Emory during the
contest. Junior Lee Bachouros added an
assist of a corner kick, her fifth helper of the season.
Goalkeepers Kaele Leonard and Erica
Stein each played a half to combine for the team’s
third-consecutive shutout and fourth overall this season.
Leonard earned the victory to improve to 5-0-1 on the campaign.
With the win, Emory improved to 7-0-1 on the season, while Agnes
Scott dropped to 2-6-0. The Eagles will return to action this
weekend, travelling to face Maryville College (Tenn.) at 5:00 PM on
Sunday.
