Emory University sophomore Merrill
Bachouros had her hand in all three of the team's
scores during the evening with two goals and an assist, lifting the
17th-ranked Eagles to a 3-0 win over Birmingham-Southern
College on Friday night.
Bachouros picked up her first score of the game and the season in
the seventh minute, getting some help from her twin sister
Lee
Bachouros, who sent her corner kick into the box,
where Merrill headed into the back of the net for the goal.
It was Lee's fourth assist of the season, all of which have come
off corner kicks. It was also the fifth goal off a corner for
the Eagles as a team through six games this season.
Merrill Bachouros would strike again just over three minutes later,
scoring at the 9:56 mark on a long shot from outside the box for
her second goal of the game. Senior Melanie Levy earned
her first assist of the season on the score.
Emory completed a dominating first half with a 12-2 advantage in
total shots, including a 5-1 tilt in shots on goal. The
Eagles took four corner kicks in the first half, while holding
Birmingham-Southern without one.
Merrill Bachouros would return the favor in the 70th
minute, finding Levy on a crossing pass in front of the goal.
Levy would redirect the pass with a quick touch, scoring her
team-best fourth goal of the season. It was Bachouros' first
assist of the season.
Bachouros became the first Eagle of the season to record a
multiple-goal game. The last player to score two goals in a
game for Emory was Levy, who did so against Carnegie Mellon on
November 7, 2009. It was also a career high in goals and
points for Merrill, besting her previous career high of three
points (one goal and one assist) during the same contest against
Carnegie last season.
The three goals were a season high for the Emory offense, and gave
the team its first win of the season by more than one goal.
Meanwhile, Emory's defense continued its dominance, holding the
Panthers to just three total shots during the game, only one of
which was on goal. It was the second shutout of the season
for the Eagle backline, and the second time in the last three games
it has held its opponent to just three total shots and one on
goal. Emory's defense has yet to allow more than six shots on
goal in a contest this season, and is holding its opponents to an
average of 3.8 shots on goal per game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Erica Stein played
the entire contest in goal, making one save en route to her first
shutout of the season. She lowered her goals-against average
0.81 on the season, while raising her record to 2-0-0.
With the win, Emory remained undefeated, improving to 5-0-1 on the
campaign. The Panthers dropped back to .500, falling to 2-2-0
with the loss.
Emory will be back in action on Sunday, hosting Rhodes College at
1:00 PM at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.
