The 21st-ranked Emory University women's soccer
team capitalized off a strong defensive effort on Sunday, holding
Bridgewater College to just three shots in a 2-1 win at the Mary
Washington Women's Soccer Classic.
The Eagles held Bridgewater without a first half shot, while
taking seven of their own including one from Sara Belsole which found the back of the net for the first
score of the game. Belsole's 35th-minute
shot was deflected into the goal, giving the senior the first score
of her career.
Emory added to their lead early in the second half, as freshman
Veronica Romero notched her first career goal,
floating a ball over the head of the Bridgewater goalkeeper and
into the net. The score would be the eventual game winner, as
Bridgewater would pull within one goal with a Melanie Waters goal
in the 76th minute, but the Emory defense would lock
down the Eagles for the rest of the contest to earn the
victory.
For the first time this season the Eagles used just one goalkeeper
in the contest, as Erica Stein earned her first
victory of the campaign. She did not need to make a save in
the contest, en route to the victory.
Emory finished the game with a 13-3 advantage in shots, and a 4-1
advantage in corner kicks. The Eagles committed just five
fouls in the game to Bridgewater's six.
Emory improved to 4-0-0 on the season with the win, marking the
fourth time in school history the Eagles have won each of their
first four games, and the first time since 2007. Bridgewater
fell to 1-3-0 with the loss.
The win sets up a key matchup for the Eagles tomorrow, who will
face nationally 12th-ranked Rowan College, also 4-0-0
this season, at 1:00 PM in the conclusion of the Mary Washington
Soccer Classic in Fredericksburg, VA.
