#7 Emory Women’s Soccer Heads to Carnegie Mellon for its Regular Season Finale

The seventh-ranked Emory University women’s soccer team will travel to Pittsburgh, PA to wrap-up its regular season, as the Eagles will face Carnegie Mellon University at 11:00 AM on Sunday, November 7th.

Emory University Eagles
Emory will begin the weekend with a 13-1-3 overall record, including a mark of 4-0-1 in road games this season.  The Eagles are currently ranked seventh in the nation in the last NSCAA NCAA Division III poll and ninth in the D3Soccer.com poll.  Regionally, Emory is the top-ranked team in the Atlantic South Region in both the NCAA and NSCAA polls.  Senior Lauren Smith has been Emory’s leading scorer with six goals this season, and is currently tied with senior Melanie Levy (four goals and four assists) for the team lead with 12 points.  Defensively, sophomore Erica Stein and Kaele Leonard have split time, combining for a 0.50 goals-against average, while the Emory backline has held opponents to 3.8 shots on goal per game and recorded eight shutouts.  Emory is led by head coach Sue Patberg, who is 75-20-15 during her six seasons with the team.

Carnegie Mellon University Tartans
Carnegie Mellon is 8-7-0 overall this season, but has fared better at home than on the road, going 6-2-0 on their own field.  The Tartans are currently the 10th-ranked team in the Great Lakes Region, according to the latest NSCAA regional poll.  Freshman forward Alex Venegas leads all freshman scorers with six goals, four assists and 16 points this season, and senior goalkeeper Anya Rosen has started 13 games this season, going 6-5-0 with two shutouts and a 1.24 goals against average.  Carnegie Mellon is led by Yon Struble, who is in his first season as a collegiate head coach.

Matchup History
Emory is 15-3-0 all time against Carnegie Mellon, including wins over the Tartans in three-straight meetings and six of the last seven.  The Eagles are 6-3-0 all time against the Tartans in Pittsburgh.  Last season, Emory defeated Carnegie Mellon 5-0 at the Woodruff P.E. Center, as Levy scored two goals for the Eagles, while Merrill Bachouros, Smith and Hailey Morris each added a goal as well.  Stein recorded the victory in goal during the game with a shutout performance, making two saves in 90 minutes.

Around the UAA
The University of Chicago has clinched the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship with a 5-1-0 conference record.  Emory is currently tied with Washington University (Mo.) for second in the conference, as each team has a 3-1-2 UAA record.  Brandeis University (3-3-0) is in fourth place, followed by the University of Rochester (2-2-2), Carnegie Mellon (2-4-0), New York University (2-4-0) and Case Western Reserve University (1-5-0).

Emory Notes
This season marks just the fourth time in the program’s history that Emory has lost one game through its first 17 contests… The previous years were 1998, 2001, and 2007… The Eagles made it to the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament in two of those three seasons (1998 and 2007)… Emory’s Kaele Leonard is currently ranked 12th among all NCAA Division III goalkeepers with a 0.902 save percentage and 15th with a 0.432 goals against average… Emory’s Kelly Costopoulos was named the UAA’s Offensive Player of the Week for women’s soccer after scoring two goals last weekend, including the game-winning ‘golden goal’ in the Eagles’ 2-1 win over Case Western Reserve University… Costpoulos leads all UAA players with nine points in conference play this season, and is tied for first in the conference with four goals in UAA matches… The freshman’s two game-winning goals are tied for the conference lead as well… Seniors Emily Rubin and Sara Belsole were named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team earlier this week.
