Playing in the final regular-season game of her career, Emory
University senior Lauren Smith scored on a penalty
kick in overtime, giving the seventh-ranked Eagles a 2-1 overtime
win over Carnegie Mellon University.
For the second-straight game an Emory player came through with a
‘golden goal’ early into overtime, as Smith’s
penalty kick came just over two minutes into the first extra
frame. It was the team-leading seventh goal of the season for
the forward, giving her a team-best
After falling behind on Alice Mayfield’s
23rd-minute goal, the Eagles did not waste much time
striking back. Emory evened the match on senior
Melanie Levy’s fifth goal of the season, as
the forward was able to take a Lauren Gorodetsky
pass and chip it over the Carnegie Mellon goalkeeper’s head
for the score.
Levy, who played in her 77th career game and made her
72nd career start, both the third-best totals in school
history, now has 14 points this season to tie Smith for the lead
among all Emory players. In addition the score was
Levy’s third in her last two games against the Tartans.
The assist was the third of the campaign for the freshman
Gorodetsky, who now has seven points during the year.
After both teams matched each other with five shots and one corner
kick apiece in the first half, the Eagles would control the second
frame with seven shots, compared to just three for the
Tartans. However, neither team would score, sending the game
into overtime, where the Eagles would win it.
Emory has now played in three-straight overtime matches, winning
the last two on ‘golden goals.’ Against Case
Western Reserve University last Sunday, the Eagles came away with a
victory on an overtime goal by freshman Kelly
Costopoulos. Smith has bookended the regular season
with ‘golden goals’ after scoring the overtime
game-winner in the Eagles’ season-opening game against Lee
University.
With the win, the Eagles finished their regular season with a
14-1-3 overall record, including a 4-1-2 mark in conference play,
good for sole possession of second place. Carnegie Mellon
finishes its regular season with an 8-8-0 record, including a 2-5-0
mark in UAA games.
With the regular season now complete, the Eagles will
await the announcement of the NCAA Division III Women’s
Soccer Tournament bracket. The selected teams and location of
the first- and second-round matches will be announced live via a
