McMahon Strikes Gold for #7 Eagles in NCAA Second Round Victory over #19 Lynchburg

McMahon Strikes Gold for #7 Eagles in NCAA Second Round Victory over #19 Lynchburg

Emory University senior Meghan McMahon broke a scoreless tie in the second overtime period, lifting the seventh-ranked Eagles to a 1-0 victory over 19th-ranked Lynchburg College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships.

McMahon scored the 'golden goal' in the 104th minute, scoring off a shot from the edge of the box following a pass from freshman Lauren Drosick.  It was both the first goal of the season for McMahon, and the first assist of the campaign for Drosick.

The goal came after both teams gave a strong defensive effort throughout the contest.  For the second straight day, the Eagles held their opponent to just four shots, two of which were on goal.  Emory took 13 shots during the day, six of which were on target.

Goalkeeper Kaele Leonard earned the victory with two saves on the day, and combined with Erica Stein for the tandem's second-straight shutout.  Jackie Bader took the loss in goal for Lynchburg, despite making five saves during the day.

McMahon is no  stranger to playing hero for the Eagles during the NCAA Tournament.  During her freshman campaign in 2007, McMahon scored the game winner during the Eagles 1-0 victory over Hardin-Simmons College, also in the second round of the tournament.

The 'golden goal' was just the second in Emory's NCAA Tournament history, along with former Eagle Nancy Wilson's during the first round of the 2005 tournament against the University of the South.  It also marked the fifth 'golden goal' of the season for Emory, a program record.

Emory improved to 16-1-3 on the season with the victory, the team's fourth-straight win.  Lynchburg will end its season with a record of 18-3-2.  It was the second time this season that the Eagles defeated the Hornets on an overtime 'golden goal.'

The Eagles will advance to the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in school history, and the first time since 2007.  Emory's next opponent will be fifth-ranked Wheaton College.

Dates, times and the location of the next two rounds of the tournament will be announced Monday.
