Emory University freshman Kelly Costopoulos scored a pair of goals in her NCAA Tournament debut, giving the seventh-ranked Eagles a 2-0 win over Maryville College in their first-round match.

After both teams battled to a scoreless first half, Costopoulos struck for her first goal of the game at the 73:09 mark.  The eventual game-winning goal was set up by a pass from freshman Clare Mullins, which was deflected towards Costopoulos.  Costopoulos then collected the rebound and shot it past goalkeeper Desiree Simmons and into the back of the net to give Emory a 1-0 lead.  An assist was credited to Mullins, her fifth of the campaign.

Costopoulos would strike again just over five minutes later, converting a header off a Lidija Barauskas corner kick.  It was the second assist of the year for Barauskas.

Costopoulos is now Emory's leading scorer this season, with a team-high seven goals and 15 points.  The University Athletic Association (UAA) Rookie of the Year also added her third game-winning goal of the season, tying her for the team lead as well.  The two-goal game was the second of the season for Costopoulos, who has scored six of her seven goals, including all three game winners, over her last six games.

Emory's defense held Maryville to four shots during the game, two of which were on goal.  The Eagles countered with 24 shots of their own, including 11 on target.

Emory sophomore goalkeepers Erica Stein and Kaele Leonard combined for the shutout, each playing a half in goal and making one save.  Leonard earned the victory with her performance in the second half, improving to 11-1-3 on the season.  Simmons, who made eight saves in the game, took the loss in goal for the Scots.

Emory improved to 15-1-3 overall this season with the victory, while Maryville ended the year with a record of 13-6-1.

The Eagles will now advance to the second round of the tournament on Sunday at 1:00 PM at the Woodruff P.E. Center.  Emory will face the winner of Saturday's Lynchburg College-Transylvania University first round match-up.
