#15 Emory Women's Soccer Defeats Oglethorpe 4-1

The Emory University women's soccer team, ranked 15th in Division III, capitalized off three second-half goals to beat Oglethorpe University 4-1 at the Woodruff P.E. Center on Tuesday.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first half off the third penalty kick goal of the season by senior defender Emily Rubin.  The play was set up after senior forward Melanie Levy drove towards the corner with the ball, but was fouled by the Oglethorpe defender as she made a move to the net.  After the foul was called, Rubin took the resulting penalty kick, placing it past the Stormy Petrels' keeper, Sarah Nania, and into the back of the net for the score.

Rubin's three goals this season match a career high for the senior, set last season, and her eight points during the campaign are a career best as well.  All three of her goals this season have come off penalty kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Erica Stein played a scoreless first half of soccer for Emory, making one save.  She earned the victory to improve to 3-0-0 on the season, while lowering her goals against average to 0.64.

The Eagles would build their lead to 3-0 in the second half, as freshman Claire Mullins scored the eventual game-winning goal unassisted in the 57th minute, followed by a goal from senior Lauren Smith in the 74th minute, off an assist from Levy.

It was the third goal of the season for Mullins, fourth for Smith, and the second assist of the year for Levy.

After Clara St. Urbain scored for Oglethorpe, her eighth of the season, Emory would cement the lead with junior Liz Harlan's second goal of the season, coming off the third assist of the year for freshman Veronica Romero.

Sophomore Kaele Leonard played the second half in goal for Emory, allowing the only score of the game and making one save.  Emory's defense allowed nine shots in the game, only two of which were on goal for the Stormy Petrels.

Meanwhile, on the offensive end, Emory took 21 shots, including 12 on goal.  The Eagles also forced 15 corner kicks in the game, while holding Oglethorpe without one during the entire contest.

With the victory, Emory improves to 9-1-2 on the season, including a mark of 9-0-1 in non-conference games.  Oglethorpe dropped to 7-5-1 on the year with the loss.

The Eagles will return to action on Friday, resuming conference play at New York University at 11:00 AM, before heading to Brandeis University on Sunday at 11:00 AM.
