In a matchup between two undefeated teams, the
21st-ranked Emory University women's soccer team
played 12th-ranked Rowan University to a 1-1 tie in the
final match of the Mary Washington Soccer Classic on Sunday.
For the fourth time this season the Eagles converted a corner kick
for a goal, as sophomore Lee Bachouros' kick
found senior Melanie Levy, who headed the ball in
for her team-leading third goal of the season in the
10th minute. It was also the team-best third
assist of the season for Bachouros, all three of which have come of
corners, including two to Levy.
Rowan would strike back to even the match at the end of the first
half, as Marina Mangano scored off an assist from Holly Bundy in
the 42nd minute. The score would remain the same
throughout the second half and at the end of the two overtime
periods.
Emory sophomore Kaele Leonard made her first
collegiate start in goal, and played all 110 minutes of the
match. Despite allowing her first career goal, she was able
to make five saves, including one in the second overtime. She
is now 3-0-1 on the season with a 0.36 goals against average.
Emory's defense held Rowan to its season lows with just one
goal and 10 shots in the game. Meanwhile, the Eagles were
able to muster 13 shots, nine of which were on goal, against the
nation's 12th-ranked squad. Emory also took
seven corners to just two for Rowan, and out-fouled the Profs
19-10.
With the tie, both teams remained undefeated, with each of their
records going to 4-0-1. Emory will return to action on
Friday, September 17th, coming back to the Woodruff
Physical Education Center to host Birmingham Southern College at
7:00 PM.
