Fifth-Ranked Eagles Win Home Opener 6-0 over Maryville

The Emory University women's soccer team continued its hot start to the 2011 campaign, as the fifth-ranked Eagles claimed a 6-0 win over Maryville College in their home-opening game on Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles took an early lead in the game, as sophomore all-American Lauren Gorodetsky scored her second goal in the last two games.  In the seventh minute, Gorodetsky was able to head in a corner kick from Lee Bachouros, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.  Emory extended its first half lead in the 30th minute, as freshman Emily Feldman scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season off assists from sophomore Kelly Costopoulos and Merrill Bachouros

Emory wasted little time getting the scoring started in the second half, as a long pass from freshman Charlotte Butker set up a breakaway for sophomore Veronica Romero, who was able to score her first goal of the season just 33 seconds into the frame.  The assist was the team-leading third of the season for Butker.

In the 54th minute, senior Caroline Coates scored her first goal of the season off Lidija Barauskas' second assist of the season.  Merrill Bachouros would cement the Eagles' lead with a pair of goals, one unassisted in the 59th minute and the other on a long shot off a Feldman assist in the 70th minute.

Emory goalkeeper Erica Stein earned the victory with a scoreless first half, improving to 4-0-1 on the season.  Junior Kaele Leonard made two second-half saves, and extended her scoreless minutes streak to 645, the second-longest streak in the program's history.

As a team, Emory's defense has recorded four-straight shutouts, and has not allowed a goal in the last 463 minutes and 18 seconds of play.  With just one goal allowed this season, the Eagles lowered their team goals-against average to 0.16.

The Eagles outshot Maryville 23-3 in the game, including a 13-2 advantage in shots on goal.  Emory took nine corner kicks in the contest, compared to just one for the Scots.

With the win, Emory remained undefeated on the season, improving to 5-0-1, while Maryville fell to 3-1-2 with the loss.  The Eagles will return to action on Friday, September 23rd at 5:00 PM, hosting Thomas University at the Woodruff P.E. Center.
