#5 Emory Defeats NYU to Claim Outright UAA Championship

Emory University sophomore Kelly Costopoulos scored the 'golden goal' in the 97th minute of play on Sunday afternoon, lifting the fifth-ranked Eagles to a 3-2 overtime win against New York University.  Combined with a Case Western Reserve loss to Washington University (Mo.), the victory clinched the UAA Championship for Emory.

The conference title is the sixth in the program's history, and the fifth outright championship.  Emory last claimed the UAA title during the 2008 season.  The UAA Championship also guarantees the Eagles an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships.

Emory fell behind in a game for just the second time this season in the 34th minute of play, when the Eagles committed foul inside the box, and Erin Ahmed was able to score her sixth goal of the season on the resulting penalty kick.

The Eagles would tie the game just before the half, taking advantage of a defensive misplay by the Violets in the 44th minute.  Sophomore defender Lauren Gorodetsky was awarded a free kick from just inside the defensive half of the field, which she boomed into the NYU box.  The Violets' defender attempted to head the ball out of the zone, but it ricocheted off her head and towards the goal, past the NYU keeper for the score.  The goal was Gorodetsky's fourth of the season, tying the game at a goal apiece.

Emory took the lead in the 70th minute on a set piece.  Junior Lee Bachouros took a corner kick, sending a low cross that snuck past the NYU defenders and into the box, where freshman Charlotte Butker was able to tap it home for her fourth goal of the year.  It was the team-leading sixth assist of the year for Bachouros.

However, just over a minute later NYU would even the match again, this time on a well-placed shot from approximately 25 yards out by Erin Haggerty, her third goal of the season.  The score would remain tied for the remainder of regulation, sending the game into overtime.

The Eagles would end the game in the 97th minute, when sophomore Lauren Drosick made a long run with the ball out of the backfield to set up a breakaway down the field.  From just inside the box, Drosick passed off to Costopoulos, who sent a shot into the back of the net for the 'golden goal.'

The goal was the fourth of the season for Costopoulos, and her second game-winning goal.  It was the second career 'golden goal' for the sophomore, both of which have come in conference games.  The assist was the first of the season for Drosick, and her second career assist on a 'golden goal.'

Emory outshot NYU 27-10 in the game, including an 11-6 edge in shots on goal.  The Eagles also took 11 corner kicks in the game, compared to just two for the Violets.

With the win, Emory improved to 14-0-2 on the season, extending the squad's program-best undefeated streak to start a season.  The Eagles also raised their conference record to 5-0-1 on the campaign.  NYU dropped to 11-6-0 overall and to 2-4-0 in UAA games with the loss.

Emory will look for the first undefeated regular season in the program's history next Saturday, as the Eagles will play host to Carnegie Mellon University at 1:30 PM.   The game will also include Emory's 'Senior Day' ceremonies, as the Eagles' graduating seniors will be recognized prior to the start of play.
