Four Members of #5 Emory’s Women’s Soccer Team Earn Academic All-District Honor

Emory University junior Erica Stein, sophomore Kelly Costopoulos, sophomore Lauren Gorodetsky, and junior Ashley Kaiser were each named to the Capital One Academic All-District team for their success both on the field and in the classroom during the 2011 season.

Stein has started all 16 games in goal for Emory this season, recording a 0.25 goals against average and an .800 save percentage.  She has a record of 10-0-1 on the season, and has contributed to 13 team shutouts during the year.  A two-time Academic all-UAA honoree, Stein has recorded a 3.70 grade point average while majoring in psychology.

Costopoulos, the 2010 UAA Rookie of the Year, has played in all 16 games for Emory this season, making a pair of starts and scoring four goals while assisting on four others.  She has two game-winning goals during the campaign, including a 'golden goal' in overtime against NYU that clinched the UAA Championship for the Eagles.  Costopoulos has a 3.96 grade point average as a biology major, and earned Academic all-UAA recognition earlier this season.

Gorodetsky earned all-America and all-UAA First Team honors her freshman year, and has continued to lead a defense that ranks fourth among Division III teams in goals against average and sixth in shutout percentage.  In addition, she has scored four goals for the Eagles during the campaign, including three game-winning goals.  Gorodetsky has a 3.72 GPA has a psychology major, and earned an Academic all-UAA honor this year.

Kaiser has played outside back for the Eagles defense, helping the squad hold opponents 6.6 shots per game and 2.6 shots on goal per game this season.  A team co-captain, Kaiser and the Emory backline have allowed just four goals during the campaign, and with 13 team shutouts is one shy of the program record.  A business major, Kaiser has accumulated a 3.75 GPA and has twice been named to the Academic all-UAA team.

By virtue of being named to the Capital One Academic All-District team, all four players will be placed on the ballot for the Academic all-America Team, which will be announced on November 29th.

Voting for the Academic All-District team is conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  Emory is part of District 5, which includes Division III schools in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Emory, which claimed the sixth University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in the program's history last weekend, will wrap up its regular season on Saturday against Carnegie Mellon University.
