#2 Emory Stays Undefeated with 1-1 Tie against Roanoke

Emory University junior Veronica Romero scored a game-tying goal in the second half on Sunday afternoon, her second tally in as many games, as the second-ranked Eagle played Roanoke College to a 1-1 double-overtime tie at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

With the tie, Emory kept its undefeated record for the season intact with a 4-0-2 mark for the season, and extended its regular season undefeated streak to 30 games (26-0-4).  Roanoke's record moved to 3-2-1 on the year with the tie.

The first 45 minutes of the match were defined by strong defensive play from both sides, particularly by the Eagles, who were able to hold the Maroons without a shot through the first frame.  Emory managed to take seven shots during the first half, five of which were on goal.  Junior Veronica Romero led all players with two shots on frame during the first half, while juniors Greta Jochmann, Kelly Costopoulos and Lauren Drosick each managed one.  The Eagles also had built a 4-0 edge in corner kicks by the end of the first half.

Roanoke would get more aggressive to start the second half, breaking through with their first shot of the game in the 49th minute, forcing Emory goalkeeper Kaele Leonard to make a save.  After Emory rallied off three unanswered shots of its own, Roanoke would get its second shot opportunity of the game, this time turning it into a goal.  The Maroons' Pierce Bradner came open on the far side of the field in the offensive zone, sending a low, hard cross into the box.  Waiting for the pass was Carmen Graves, who was able to launch a lunging header shot past Leonard, giving Roanoke a 1-0 lead.

However, it would not take long for the Eagles to answer back.  With the Roanoke defense attempting to clear a ball in the 61st minute, Emory sophomore Charlotte Butker was able to step in front of a pass and regain possession, setting up a two-on-one breakaway with Romero.  Butker sent a pass into the box to Romero, who took a quick shot past the keeper for the equalizer.

For Romero, it was her second goal of the weekend, following her five-point performance against Sewanee on Saturday (one goal and three assists).  Butker was credited with her third assist of the season, tying her with Romero for the team lead.

From that point forward, Emory's defense would not allow another shot to the Maroons.  However, despite finishing the game with a distinct edge in both shots (28-2) and shots on goal (13-2), the Eagles would not find the back of the net again in the game.

The Eagles will play the third game of a six-game home stand on Friday, September 21st, when Emory will play host to Birmingham-Southern College at 7:00 PM.

Emory Notes

In addition to its regular season undefeated streak, Emory has also not been defeated in its last 38 non-conference home games, dating back to 2005… Emory has gone 34-0-4 in non-conference home games during that stretch… The Eagles extended their overall home undefeated streak to 17 games… Roanoke's goal was the first scored against Emory in the second half of a game this season… It marked just the second time the Eagles have trailed in a game in 2012.
