Emory & Carnegie End Regular Season with Scoreless Tie

Emory & Carnegie End Regular Season with Scoreless Tie

The eighth-ranked Emory University women's soccer team wrapped up its 2012 regular season with a scoreless tie at 19th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA on Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles finished the match with the majority of the opportunities, but for the third-straight contest, Emory was unable to find the back of the net.  The Eagles outshot the Tartans 16-6 in the game, including a 10-3 edge in shots on goal.

Emory senior goalkeeper Kaele Leonard finished the game with a pair of saves, both coming during a stretch of a minute in the second half.  Leonard made her first of the two saves by getting her fingertips on a shot by Alex Venegas, and then on the resulting corner kick, made a diving save on a header attempt by Katie Davis.

Emory's best chance of the first half came at the very end of the frame, sophomore Meredith Doherty headed a Lee Bachouros corner kick on frame, but a Carnegie Mellon defender was able to clear the ball away before it could cross into the goal.  The Eagles finished the first half with a 4-1 edge in shots, including a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal.

The Eagles continued to control possession for the majority of the contest, outshooting the Tartans 9-4 in the second half and 3-1 in overtime.  Sophomore Emily Feldman, junior Clare Mullins, and junior Veronica Romero all tied for the game lead with three shots, while Feldman, Romero and senior Lee Bachouros each had game highs with two shots on goal.

With the tie, Emory finishes its regular season with an 11-1-6 record, and a 3-1-3 mark in UAA action, as the Eagles tied with the University of Chicago for third in the conference with 12 points.  Carnegie Mellon finished second in the UAA with a 4-1-2 record and 14 points, and an 11-1-4 mark overall.

The Eagles will now await the selection of the field for the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament, as the squad hopes to receive an at-large bid to the Championship draw.  Fans can watch the NCAA Championship Selection Show online at http://www.ncaa.com/live/player?vid=2012/563&date=2012/11/05, on Monday, November 5th at 1:30 PM.
