#16 Emory Handles #7 Centre to Advance to NCAA Round of 16

The sixteenth-ranked Emory University women's soccer team utilized a goal in each half and some strong goalkeeping to hand the seventh-ranked Centre College Colonels a 2-0 loss on their home field in Danbury, Kentucky on Sunday, and advance to the round of 16 of the NCAA Division III Championships.

The Eagles, now 13-1-6 for the season, will face Loras College (19-4-0) in the third round of the tournament next weekend.  The dates, times and location for the round of 16 and quarterfinal matches will be released on Monday.

The Eagles grabbed the early lead in the contest, courtesy of a well-place corner kick and some perseverance by sophomore Charlotte Butker.  Junior Greta Jochmann took the corner kick for the Eagles in the 17th minute, placing it on the near post, where Butker took an initial shot.  Although her first attempted on goal was knocked away by Centre goalkeeper Megan Foley, Butker was able to follow-up with a second shot, sending it past the keeper for her fifth goal of the season.

Just moments later, it would be the play of Emory senior goalkeeper Erica Stein that would allow the Eagles to keep their lead.  After a free kick, Stein made save on back-to-back shot attempts by the Colonels, including one on the second attempt while she was lying on her side along the goal line.

Stein would finish the first half with six saves, a career-best mark for the net minder.  Emory and Centre ended the first 45 minutes even with six shots on goal apiece, with the Colonels holding a slight edge in total shots, 8-7.

Stein would give way to senior Kaele Leonard in the second half, who would make three saves within a minute stretch starting in the 53 minute, including pair of Centre shots, the latter on a rebound, keeping the Eagles' lead at 1-0.

Emory added onto its advantage in the 63rd minute, again with the help of a corner kick.  This time, the corner, taken by Butker, was cleared out of the 18-yard box by the Centre defense, but right to an open Kelly Costopoulos, who sent a lofting shot over the keeper's reach and into the far corner of the net for her eighth goal of the season, tying Veronica Romero for the team lead.

Leonard would finish the game with four saves of her own to preserve the shutout and close out the Colonels.  Both teams finished the contest dead even with 14 shots and 10 shots on goal apiece.  Emory's defense recorded its 13th shutout of the season, and fifth in the last six games.

Centre closed out the 2012 campaign with an overall record of 21-1-0.

This will be Emory's ninth trip to the round of 16 of the NCAA Division III Championships, and the third-straight season the team has reached the 'Sweet 16.'  More details on the Eagles' next match will be posted to EmoryAthletics.com as soon as it is made available.

Emory Notes
This is the second-straight year that Emory has eliminated Centre from the NCAA Tournament… The Eagles defeated the Colonels 2-0 in the second round of the tournament last season in Atlanta… Sunday's game marked both the first time this season that Centre was shut out, and the second time that the Colonels allowed two or more goals in a game… Butker's goal gave her 20 points (five goals and 10 assists) for the campaign, as she became the second Eagle to reach the 20-point mark this season, joining Veronica Romero (eight goals and four assists)… It marked the second-straight season and the 13th time in the program's history that the Eagles have had at least two scorers reach the 20-point plateau… Last season, Emily Feldman (seven goals, six assists) and Merrill Bachouros (eight goals and four assists) both scored 20 for Emory… Kelly Costopoulos' second-half goal gave her 19 points for the year.
