Feldman Scores Two to Lift Eagles into NCAA Quarterfinals

Emory University sophomore Emily Feldman scored a pair of first half goals on Saturday in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to guide the 16th-ranked Eagles to a 2-1 win over 19th-ranked Loras College and the team's second-ever berth into the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Quarterfinals.

The win was first NCAA Round of 16 win for the Eagles in the program's history, and marked the second time in the last three seasons that the team has advanced to the quarterfinals.  In 2010, the Eagles tied Wheaton (IL) 1-1 in the Round of 16, before advancing in a shootout.

After a back-and-forth start to the game, Feldman would break through for the Eagles late in the first half.  In the 39th minute, the sophomore intercepted a clearing attempt by a defender and streaked down the far side of the field, getting behind Loras' last line of defense, and sent a low shot past the Duhawks' keeper and into the right corner of the net for a goal.

Just over a minute later, Feldman struck again for Emory.  Sophomore Meredith Doherty was able to settle down a throw-in from Lauren Drosick in the attacking zone, lobbing the ball across the box, where senior Lee Bachouros was able to head it to Feldman.  She was able to strike it to inside the near post and into the goal to boost the Eagles' lead to 2-0 heading into halftime.

Feldman is now second among all Eagles with seven goals this season, three of which have come during tournament play to lead all Emory players.  She became the fourth Emory player all-time to score multiple goals in an NCAA Tournament game, joining former Eagle Alexa Wahr (2008 against St. Mary's) and current teammates Kelly Costopoulos (2010 against Maryville) and Merrill Bachouros (2011 against Piedmont).

Meanwhile, the Eagles defense would hold Loras without a shot for a 60-minute stretch, starting at the 14:01 mark.  However, when the Duhawks were able to get their next shot off, they would make it count, as Ailish Rispin picked up her sixth goal of the season on a high shot past Emory goalkeeper Kaele Leonard in the 75th minute.

From that point forward, the Eagles defense locked down on the Duhawks, allowing just one more shot for the remainder of the game, that Leonard was able to convert for a save.  Emory limited Loras, which entered the game ranked 49th in Division III with 2.74 goals per game, to just four shots total in the contest.

The Eagles, now 14-1-6 this year, will advance to Sunday's quarterfinal match, where they will face the winner of Saturday's round of 16 game between host and 17th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University and 25th-ranked Wheaton College (Mass.).  Sunday's game is scheduled for a 1:30 PM start.  Loras ended its season with a 19-5-0 record, as the Eagles put an end to the Duhawks' 12-game winning streak.

A full preview of Sunday's game will be posted to EmoryAthletics.com later in the day on Saturday.
