#2 Emory & SUNY Cortland Play to Scoreless Tie

#2 Emory & SUNY Cortland Play to Scoreless Tie

The second-ranked Emory University Women's Soccer team wrapped up its weekend by battling the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons to a double-overtime scoreless tie on Sunday afternoon.

Emory goalkeepers Gabrielle Pelura and Liz Arnold split time in the net to complete the combined shutout, the first of the season for the Eagles.  Arnold, who picked up the tie on her record to go to 1-0-1 on the season, lowered her goals-against average to 0.41 with the effort.  As a team, the Eagles defense lowered its goals-against average to 0.90 with the shutout.

The two teams played a scoreless first half, despite clear advantages for Emory in shots (10-1), shots on goal (4-0) and corner kicks (4-1).  One of the Eagles' best chances to score in the first half came in the 34th minute of action, when senior Clare Mullins took a shot that was saved by Cortland keeper Taylor Hudson, and junior Karina Rodriguez followed shortly after with a header shot that was cleared off the line by a Red Dragon defender.

Late in the first half, senior all-American Lauren Gorodetsky launched a header on goal after a corner kick from junior Meredith Doherty, but the attempt was saved by Hudson.  Rodruguez added her second shot on frame with 10 seconds remaining in the half, but Hudson was again able to secure possession and prevent the goal.

The second half proved to be more of the same, with the Eagles holding an 11-5 edge in total shots during the frame, but could not find the back of the net for the go-ahead score.  Four of Cortland's five shots were on goal, Arnold was able to convert each of the four attempts for saves to keep the contest scoreless and send the game into overtime.

The defensive deadlock would continue into the extra time, with each team taking three shots during the two overtime periods, none of which were on goal.

Emory outshot Cortland 24-9 in the game, with a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.  The Eagles registered seven shots on goal for the contest, while the Red Dragons finished with four tallies on frame.

With the tie, Emory moved to 2-1-1 for the season, while Cortland stands at 1-1-1.

Emory will end its season-opening five game road trip on Friday, September 13th, traveling to Cleveland, TN to face Lee University at 6:00 PM.  The Lady Flames, who finished the 2012 season ranked second in the NAIA, have opened the 2013 season with back-to-back losses, as the squad has begun its transition to an NCAA Division II program.
