Emory's Shivani Beall One Of Two UAA Reps For NCAA Woman Of The Year Award

Former Emory women's soccer star Shivani Beall, along with Michelle Karabin (track and field) from Carnegie Mellon, have been selected as the University Athletic Association's representatives for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

Rooted in Title IX, the NCAA Woman of the Year Award was established in 1991 to recognize graduating female student-athletes who have completed their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.

A fixture in the Eagles' line during her four years, Beall appeared in 69 contests and drew 63 starting assignments.  She finished among the top-10 in program history in a host of categories including shots on goal (1st, 112), shots attempted (2nd, 213), goals scored (10th, 22), assists (11th, 20) and points (11th, 64).  A three-time All-University Association First-Team honoree, she played her way to South Atlantic Region first-team berths her final two years.

Shivani served as a student leader at Bread Coffeehouse, which is affiliated with the Emory campus ministry and is a welcoming place for students of all faiths. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, she began volunteering at the Clarkston Community Health Center to further explore her interest in providing healthcare to underserved populations, as the clinic provides free healthcare to a primarily refugee population, and hopes to continue there in the fall.

Beall graduated in May as a biology major with a minor is sociology, finishing with a grade-point average of 3.96.  A three-time member of the University Athletic Association All-Academic Team, she was tabbed as a 2019 Second Team Academic All-American as voted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  In February of this year, she was selected as a fall recipient of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

"Shivani is an outstanding young woman who has exceled in all of her endeavors. She has been a leader, role model, and an outstanding representative of her family and Emory University," said Assistant Vice-President/Clyde Partin Sr., Director of Athletics Mike Vienna. "I cannot think of a student who is more deserving of this prestigious honor."

Conference offices selected up to two nominees each from their pool of member school nominees. All nominees who competed in a sport not sponsored by their school's primary conference, as well as associate conference nominees and independent nominees, were considered by a selection committee. Then, the Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the Top 30 honorees — 10 from each division.

From the Top 30, the Woman of the Year selection committee will determine the top three honorees in each division and announce nine finalists. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then will choose the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year, who will be named this fall.

All totaled, NCAA member schools have nominated a record 605 female college athletes for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year Award - 259 from Division I, 126 from Division II and 220 from Division III. Nominees competed in 24 sports, with multisport student-athletes accounting for 128 of the nominees.
