2022 Women's Soccer Season Recap

2022 Women's Soccer Season Recap

The 2022 season marked a return to the Sweet 16 for the Emory University women's soccer team as the Eagles reached the second weekend for the first time since 2013.

Backed by another strong defensive unit and one of the top scoring offensives in the country, Emory posted a 13-5-1 record and finished third in the competitively loaded UAA with a 5-2 conference record. It represented the 33rd consecutive winning season for the program and the fourth season in a row a Sue Patberg-led Eagles squad won 12 or more games.

Emory qualified for the NCAA tournament for the fourth straight season after winning 11 of its final 13 games including a 10-game winning from September 9th through October 20th. It was the second time in program history a winning streak had reached double digits and finished two wins shy of tying the longest win streak in team history.

The Eagles were chosen as opening round hosts for the first time since 2013 and hosted Piedmont, Washington & Lee and Centre College on the first weekend. Emory easily dispatched the Lions 7-0 in the first round thanks to junior Mia Han's hat trick over the first 20 minutes of the contest. It was the team's third hat trick of the season and the first-ever for Han.

The win set up a rematch of the 2021 NCAA Second Round as Emory took on Centre in the postseason for a second time. The two sides battled across 110 minutes, including Han's game-tying goal in the 102nd minute, and headed to penalty kicks to decide a winner. After freshman Sophia Garcia came through with a huge diving save, graduate student Haley Barge sent the Eagles through with the clincher.

In the Sweet 16, the Eagles were matched up against perennial power Messiah University and controlled play throughout the 90 minutes. However, an early goal in the second half proved to be the difference as the Falcons secured the 1-0 victory.

For the season, senior Kylie Hall was the offensive catalyst as she put together one of the best all-around performances by an Eagle in over 30 years. Hall established new program records in total assists (16) and most consecutive games with at least one point (9) and at least one assist (7) while collecting 34 points – the sixth-most ever in a single-season in team history. Hall earned All-America Third Team honors by D3soccer.com and became the fifth Eagle to be honored as UAA MVP, earning Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Hall was one of six Eagles to record 11 or more points and was one of four to earn All-Region acclaim by the United Soccer Coaches as she was joined by freshman Riley Miller, graduate student Mara Rodriguez and junior Grace Reyer. The four also led a charge of six Eagles honored on the All-UAA Team with Hall, Reyer and Miller landing spots on the First Team.

Furthermore, Hall was recognized for her work in the classroom as well as her performance on the field as she was tabbed to the CSC Academic All-America Third Team along with classmate Aubrey Blanchard
