Women's Soccer Drops UAA Opener at #3 WashU

The No. 15 ranked Emory University women's soccer team fell on the road to the No. 3 ranked WashU Bears in the University Athletic Association opener at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Bears netted a pair of first half goals to remain unbeaten on the season at 8-0 while the defeat drops the Eagles to 4-2-2.

WashU's Ella Koleno opened the scoring in the fifth minute, with her strike deflecting off an Emory defender and finding the back of the net.

Freshman Kaitlyn Nimmer had the Eagles' strongest opportunity of the afternoon in the 22nd minute as she got loose on a counter and put a shot on target. Her attempt looked destined for the far post but missed by near inches.

Following Nimmer's threat, WashU was able to capitalize with another tally in the 35th minute as Regan Cannon pushed a floater to the top right corner to give the Bears the two-goal edge.

Emory appeared to record the first goal allowed in eight games by the stout WashU defensive unit in the 75th minute, however the side referee determined the Eagles were offsides, negating the score.

The Bears finished the contest with a 13-8 advantage in total shots and led Emory 6-5 in shots on goal. WashU also collected five corner kicks compared to just one for the visitors.

The Eagles look to rebound Wednesday night with a non-conference matchup against the Scots of Covenant College. Kickoff from the WoodPEC is set for 6:00 pm.
