Athletes of the Week

(Mar. 12) Emory University swimmer Leigh Psaris finished in the top-five in six separate events at the NCAA Division III National Championship Meet.  Individually, Psaris recorded a national second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly, and third-place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly.  The freshman, who was named the conference Rookie of the Year earlier in the season, was also part of the second-place 400-yard freestyle relay team, the third-place 800-yard freestyle relay team, and the fifth-place 400-yard medley relay team.  Psaris' performance led the Eagles to a third-place finish, marking the sixth-consecutive year that the Eagles have recorded a top-three national finish.


(Feb. 12) Emory University's Leigh Psaris took home the University Athletic Association's (UAA) Rookie of the Year honors after recording a UAA-record time, two pool-record times and five top-two finishes at the conference championships.  Psaris finished first in the 100-yard butterfly with a UAA- and pool-record time of 57.43 seconds, good for a NCAA automatic qualifying time.  The freshman set a pool record in the 200-yard butterfly as well, finishing first in the event while swimming an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:06.88.  She also recorded a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 5:03.08 in the 500-yard freestyle, while finishing second.  Psaris was part of two second-place relay teams, helping Emory's 800-yard freestyle relay team to an automatic qualifying time, and the 400-yard freestyle team to a provisional time.  Psaris' performance at the meet led the Eagles to their ninth-consecutive UAA Championship.


(Feb. 5) Emory University swimmer Sarah Coyle recorded a personal-best and a season-best time during the Orange and Blue Classic last weekend.  Coyle recorded the best time of her career in the 200-yard freestyle, swimming a time of 2:02.88.  Coyle followed that performance with a season-best time of 1:03.9 in the 100-yard butterfly.   


(Jan. 29) Emory University's Ellen Flader recorded two first-place finishes, including one NCAA provisional qualifying time, during the Eagles' dual meet against Transylvania University (Ky.).  Competing in the 100-yard breaststroke, Flader finished in first-place with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:07.21.  The junior then swam a 2:29.62 in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in first for the second time of the meet.  Flader's performance helped the Eagles defeat Transylvania 199-89, and finish the season with a 9-5 record in dual meets.


(Jan. 15) Emory University freshman Ruth Westby recorded five first-place finishes over the course of two meets, helping Emory University to three-team wins last weekend.  Against the Division II University of Tampa (Fla.), Westby led the way for Emory, finishing first in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, and was part of the first-place 200-yard medley relay team.  Swimming against three Division I opponents in Georgia Tech, the University of New Orleans, and the University of North Florida, Westby recorded NCAA Division III ‘B' qualifying times in the 50-yard freestyle (24.10) and the 100-yard freestyle (52.32), finishing first in both of the events.  Westby's performance helped the Eagles, ranked first in Division III according to collegeswimming.com, to a 3-1 record against the four teams, as the Eagles improved to 8-5 overall this season. 


(Dec. 4) Emory University swimmer Sarah Nicholson finished first in each of the four races she swam in during a dual meet against the University of the South (Tenn.).  Nicholson recorded two individual top finishes, winning the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.02 and the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 54.27.  The senior contributed to two Emory first-place relay teams as well, swimming legs in the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle teams.  In total, Nicholson scored 40 points for Emory, helping the Eagles to a 171-105 victory over the University of the South.  Emory improved to 5-4 in dual meets this season.


(Nov. 20) Emory University's Leigh Psaris finished first in three races and third in two others during two weekend meets.  Against the eighth-ranked University of Georgia and the University of Arkansas, both Division I schools, Psaris finished first in the 200-yard butterfly, breaking her own school-record for the fourth time this season, with a time 2:03.88 in the event.  Psaris recorded third-place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard freestyle as well.  Psaris continued her success against Limestone College (S.C.) and the Savannah College of Art and Design (Ga.), finishing first in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events.  Psaris' performances helped the Eagles improve to 4-4 in dual meets this season.


(Nov. 6) Emory University's Sara Hostalet finished first in four events, and in the top three in six of the seven events she swam at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. Hostalet finished first in the 100-yard backstroke, swimming her season-best time of 1:00.24. Hostalet recorded three more first-place finishes as part of the 200-yard medley, 200-yard freestyle, and 400-yard freestyle relay teams, all of which set season-best times. The 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay teams each made the NCAA ‘B' cut, based on finishing times. The sophomore also swam a season-best in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing third in the event with a time of 24.95. Hostalet's performance helped the Eagles, 2-2 this season, finish first in the meet for the fourth-consecutive year.


(Oct. 30) Emory University's Tess Pasternak swam three season-best times, as the Eagles hosted a meet against the University of North Carolina Wilmington.  Pasternak recorded a time of 59.23 second in the 100 yard backstroke, and swam a 2:08.11 in the 200 yard backstroke, finishing first in both events.  The sophomore finished second in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:12.49.  All three times were Pasternak's best performances through the Eagles' first four meets this season. 


(Oct. 23) Emory University swimmer Ruth Westby finished first in one event for Emory, and second in two others, helping the Eagles to wins against Davidson College (N.C.) and Georgia Southern University last week. Westby claimed victory in the 100 yard freestyle, swimming a time of 55.10. The freshman finished second in the 50 yard freestyle, and was a member of the second-place 400 yard freestyle relay team. Westby's performance helped the Eagles improve their record to 2-1 this season.


(Oct. 16) Leigh Psaris started her Emory career on a positive note, setting a new school record in the 200 yard butterfly during a dual meet with Boston College (Mass.).  The freshman recorded a time of 2:04.98, besting the previous school record of 2:05.25 and finishing first in the event.  Psaris also topped the standings in the 100 yard butterfly, with a time of 57.55, and in the 400 yard individual medley, swimming a time of 4:35.79.  Psaris scored 27 points for the Eagles in the meet, as Emory was edged by the Division I opponent, Boston College, by a score of 151-149.
