Athletes of the Week

(Mar. 17) Emory University's Ruth Westby became the first Eagle to win an individual National Championship since the 2006 season, claiming the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle at the NCAA Division III National Swimming & Diving Championships.  Westby recorded a time of 23.40 seconds in the event, setting a new school record and becoming the first Eagle to win a National Championship in the 50 freestyle.  The sophomore earned individual all-America honors in two other events, finishing third in both the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyles.  She was also a part of three all-America relays, helping the 200-yard freestyle relay to a fourth-place finish, the 800-yard freestyle relay to a third-place finish, and the 400-yard freestyle relay to a sixth-place finish.  Westby now has 13 all-America certificates over her two-year career, the sixth-most in school history and four shy of the school record.  Her performance helped the Eagles finish fourth, Emory's eighth-consecutive top-four national finish.

(Mar. 17) Emory University's Liz Horvat earned five all-America honors while competing at the NCAA Division III Women's Swimming & Diving Championships.  Horvat opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, swimming a time of 4:55.25, one-hundredth of a second shy of the school record.  The freshman also recorded a second-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle, and a sixth-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley.  Horvat earned her final two all-America certificates as part of Emory's relay teams, pacing the Eagles' third-place 800-yard freestyle relay team, and sixth-place 400-yard freestyle relay team.  Her five all-America certificates are the third most by a freshman in Emory history.  Horvat's performance helped the Eagles finish fourth at the meet, Emory's eighth-consecutive top-four national finish.


(Feb. 25) Emory University's Ruth Westby was named the University Athletic Association's (UAA) Swimmer of the Year, based on her performance at the conference-championship meet last weekend.  Westby became the first swimmer in UAA Championship history to sweep the freestyle sprint events during the meet, setting UAA meet records in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles, along with a win in the 200-yard freestyle. The sophomore set NCAA automatic qualifying marks in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyles, and also swam on two winning relays for Emory, anchoring the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays.  Westby, who led the third-ranked Eagles to their 10th-consecutive UAA Championship, became the seventh Emory athlete to be named the UAA's Swimmer of the Year.


(Feb. 4) Senior Ellen Flader helped the second-ranked Emory University Swimming and Diving Team split a pair of dual meets last weekend.  Competing against the University of North Carolina (the 10th-ranked squad in Division I) and Johns Hopkins University (ranked seventh in Division III), Flader was the top Division III finisher and fourth overall in the 100-yard breaststroke in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:07.46.  She later finished third in the 200-yard breaststroke, swimming a time of 2:27.27.  Flader, who has won five All-America certificates over her collegiate career, led Emory to a 175-93 win over Johns Hopkins, despite a 165-82 loss to North Carolina.


(Jan. 28) Emory University's Lillian Ciardelli set three NCAA provisional qualifying times while competing against Division I Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt University (Tenn.).  Ciardelli finished third in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly, recording provisional qualifying times of 24.38 seconds in the former and 58.36 seconds in the latter.  The sophomore's third provisional qualifying time of the day came as part of the 200-yard medley relay team, which finished the event second in a time of 1:48.65.  Ciardelli's performance lifted the second-ranked Eagles to a 173-105 over Vanderbilt, despite a 173-105 loss to Georgia Tech.


(Jan. 21) Emory University's Morgan Klinzing recorded two first-place finishes while competing in a dual meet against Wingate University (N.C.), the 23rd-ranked team in Division II.  Klinzing finished first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.42 seconds and also topped the standings as part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team.  The freshman also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle, recording a time of 24.87 seconds.  Klinzing helped the second-ranked Eagles to a 133-73 over Wingate, as Emory improved to 6-1 in dual meets this season.


(Jan. 14) Emory University's Tess Pasternak claimed first place in three different events for the Eagles, during the squad's 190-71 dual-meet victory over the University of Tampa (Fla.).  Competing in her first meet of the 2007-08 season, Pasternak was the top finisher in both the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard backstroke, swimming a time of 1:01.17 in the former and 2:11.84 in the latter.  The All-American junior was also the first leg of the Eagles' 200-yard medley relay team, which finished first in a time of 1:52.41.  Pasternak contributed a total of 33 points during the meet, helping the second-ranked Eagles improve to 5-1 in dual meets this season.      


Swimmer:
(Dec. 3) Emory University freshman Liz Horvat recorded five NCAA qualifying times during the three-day Miami University Invitational.  Horvat opened the meet with an automatic qualifying time of 17:16.80 in the 1,650-yard freestyle, good for a sixth-place finish.  She then recorded her second-automatic qualifying time of the meet, finishing 10th in the 400-yard individual medley with a mark of 4:28.13.  Horvat rounded out the meet with three additional provisional qualifying times, finishing fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:01.95), sixth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.42), and seventh as part of the Eagles' 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:33.60).  Horvat helped the second-ranked Eagles' to a tenth-place finish at the meet.

Diver:
(Dec. 3) Emory University diver Jacki Powers helped Emory to a victory during a dual meet against the University of the South (Tenn.).  Powers finished first in the three-meter dive, recording a score of 257.40, over 53 points better than the next competitor.  The score was less than eight-points shy of an NCAA qualifying mark.  The senior also finished second in the one-meter dive, scoring 230.40 points in the event.  Powers' performance in the diving events helped Emory to a 145-81 win over the University of the South, as the second-ranked Eagles improved to 4-1 in dual meets this season. 


Swimmer:
(Nov. 19) Emory University freshman Liz Horvat helped the Eagles' Swimming and Diving team to a 145-48 dual meet win over Darton College (Ga.).  Horvat finished first in both the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle, recording a time of 10:37.35 in the former and 1:58.62 in the latter.  Her performances this season have helped the top-ranked Eagles to a 3-1 record in dual meets this season.

Diver:
(Nov. 19) Emory University diver Chelsea Murphy helped the Eagles to a 145-48 victory in a dual meet with Darton College (Ga.).  The sophomore opened her day with a first-place finish in the one-meter dive, scoring 225.23 points in the event.  She went on to finish first in the three-meter dive as well, recording a score of 204.68.  Murphy has contributed to the top-ranked Eagles' 3-1 record in dual meets this season.


(Nov. 12) Emory University's Marie Kim recorded three NCAA provisional qualifying times during the Emory Fall Invitational.  Competing against a number of the top club teams in the region, Kim finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke in a provisional qualifying time of 1:07.50.  The freshman followed that performance with a provisional qualifying time of 2:26.69 in the 200-yard breaststroke, good for a fifth-place finish in the event.  Kim swam the second leg of Emory's 400-yard medley relay team, which finished second in the race with a provisional qualifying time of 4:00.20.  The Eagles are the top-ranked team in Division III this season. 


(Nov. 5) Emory University's Marie Kim helped the Eagles to a 107-89 win over the Savannah College of Art & Design (Ga.) by finishing first in two events during the dual meet.  Kim was the top finisher in the 200-yard individual medley, recording a time of 2:14.36, the fastest time by an Emory swimmer this season.  The freshman was also part of the Eagles' first-place 400-yard medley relay team, which recorded a time of 4:06.34.  Kim has made an immediate impact on the squad, helping the Eagles to a 2-1 start to the 2007-08 campaign.


(Oct. 29) Emory University diver Jaqueline Powers finished first in both the one-meter and three-meter dives during the Eagles' dual meet against NCAA Division I University of North Carolina - Wilmington.  Powers recorded a score of 210.08 in the one-meter dive, finishing first in the event by 16.80 points.  The senior followed that performance with a first-place score of 253.05 in the three-meter dive.  Powers scored 18 of the Eagles' 132 points during the dual meet.


(Oct. 22) Emory University's Ruth Westby finished first in three events and recorded two NCAA provisional qualifying times while competing against Division I Davidson College (N.C.).  Westby finished first in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle, recording a time of 1:54.80 in the former, and 52.05 in the later.  Both times were provisional qualifying times under the 2007 standards.  In addition, the sophomore was part of Emory's first place 400-yard medley relay team, whose time of 4:00.95 was less than half a second shy of a provisional qualifying time.  Westby's performance helped the Eagles to a 127-116 win over Davidson.


(Oct. 8) Emory University's Ruth Westby finished first in four events at the 2007 Emory Blue & Gold Intrasquad meet.  Westby, a seven-time All-American last season, finished first in four events, including the 200-yard medley relay, the 200-yard freestyle, the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle.  The sophomore's contributions helped her ‘Blue' team to a 188-97 win at the intrasquad event.
