Athletes of the Week

(Mar. 23) Emory University's Liz Horvat was named the NCAA Division III Women' Swimmer of the Year, after winning four national championships and setting four Division III records at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.  Horvat opened the meet with a win in the 500-yard freestyle, setting a Division III record with a time of 4:47.04.  She followed that with a Division III record time of 4:16.17 in the 400-yard individual medley on the second day of the meet.  On day three, Horvat was part of Emory's national champion 800-yard freestyle relay team, which swam a record time of 7:21.05.  The sophomore concluded the meet with her fourth national championship and Division III record time, winning the 1,650-yard freestyle with a mark of 16:30.17.  Horvat became the first Eagle to earn a national Swimmer of the Year honor, and matched a school record with three national championships at one meet.  Her performances during the week helped Emory to a second-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships.


(Feb. 23) Emory University's Rachael Mullen recorded a NCAA ‘A' Cut time in the 1,650-yard freestyle, while competing at the Emory Last Chance Invitational.  Mullen finished first in the event, swimming a time of 17:14.55.  The freshman's mark was both a personal-best, and the second-best time by an Eagle in the 1,650-yard freestyle this season. 

(Feb. 23) Emory University's Jennifer Aronoff was part of two NCAA ‘A' cut efforts during the Emory Last Chance Invitational.  Aronoff swam the breaststroke as part of the Eagles' school-record setting 200-medley relay team, which recorded an automatic qualifying time of 1:43.44.  The freshman also set a school record in the 100-yard breaststroke, swimming a time of 1:04.77 in the event, an NCAA ‘A' cut. 


(Feb. 16) Emory University's Liz Horvat won three conference championships at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships in Chicago, IL.  On the first day of competition, Horvat won the 500-yard freestyle with a UAA-record, pool-record, and NCAA ‘A' cut time of 4:58.54.  On day two, the sophomore set a pool-record while winning the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:28.75, and was part of the Eagles' conference-record setting and first-place 800-yard freestyle relay team (7:34.61).  Horvat rounded out the meet with a second-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle on the final day of competition, recording an ‘A' cut time of 17:07.46.  Horvat's performance helped the Eagles win their 11th-consecutive UAA Championship.


(Feb. 2) Emory University junior Ruth Westby paced the day for the second-ranked Emory women's swimming and diving team, taking part in three of the squad's four first-place finishes during the meet and recording four NCAA ‘B' cut times during a dual meet against Division I Georgia Tech.  Westby was the top finisher in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, recording ‘B' cut times of 23.80 seconds and 51.90 seconds respectively.  She also finished second in the 200-yard freestyle, with a provisional qualifying time of 1:52.75.  Westby finished her day with a first-place finish and provisional time of 1:35.36 as part of the Eagles' 200-yard freestyle relay.

(Feb. 2) Emory University diver Chelsea Murphy recorded her second NCAA qualifying score of the season in the three-meter dive.  Murphy recorded a score of 270.40 in the three-meter dive, the second-best score of her career, while finishing second in the event.  The junior also finished second in the one-meter dive with a score of 235.79.


(Jan. 26) Emory University's Lillian Ciardelli set pool records in both events she competed in during the second-ranked Eagles dual meet victory at Division II Wingate University.  Ciardelli opened the meet with a pool record and an NCAA ‘B' cut time of 58.10 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing first in the event.  The junior later helped set a pool record as part of the Eagles' 400-yard freestyle relay team, as the squad took first place in a time of 3:37.10.  Ciardelli's performance helped the 6-2 Eagles defeat Wingate University, ranked 16th in Division II, by a score of 186-59.


(Jan. 19) Emory University's Ruth Westby finished first four events during the Eagles' dual meet victories over Darton College and Limestone College.  Wesby finished first with times of 24.11 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 58.51 in the 100-yard butterfly, both provisional qualifying marks.  The junior was also part of the Eagles' first-place 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams.  Westby's performance helped the second-ranked Eagles defeat both Darton and Limestone, raising the squad's record to 5-2 in dual meets this season.

(Jan. 19) Emory University diver Chelsea Murphy recorded two first-place finishes and an NCAA qualifying mark while competing against Darton College and Limestone College this weekend.  Murphy finished first in the three-meter dive with a score of 274.20, good enough to qualify her for the NCAA Championships in the event.  The junior also finished first in the one-meter dive, setting a season-best mark of 253.42.  Murphy helped the Eagles to dual-meet victories over Limestone, ranked 20th in Division II, and Darton.


(Jan. 12) Emory University's Tess Pasternak recorded a first-place finish in each of the three events she competed in during the second-ranked Eagles dual meet against the University of Tampa, ranked 12th in Division II.  Pasternak, who has earned 10 all-America certificates over her career, recorded individual first-place finishes in both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstrokes, recording times of 1:00.78 and 2:10.79, respectively.  The senior co-captain also finished first as part of the Eagles' 200-yard medley relay team (1:51.20).  Pasternak helped the Eagles to a 182-80 victory over the Spartans, as the squad improved to 3-2 this season.


(Dec. 8) Emory University's Liz Horvat set a new NCAA Division III record in the 500-yard freestyle at the Miami Invitational on Saturday.  Facing mostly Division I competition in the event, Horvat finished first in a time of 4:51.71, besting the previous Division III record of 4:52.34, set by Kendra Stern of Amherst College at the 2008 NCAA Championships.  The sophomore also recorded ‘A' cut times in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:05.41 - the fastest time by a Division III swimmer this season) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:27.38 in the finals and 4:28.66 during the preliminaries), finishing third and fourth, respectively, in the events.  Horvat scored 93 of the second-ranked Eagles' 837.5 points, leading the squad to a fifth-place finish.

(Dec. 8) Emory University's Amy Minowitz recorded an NCAA ‘A' cut time in the 1,650-yard freestyle at the Miami University Invitational.  Minowitz recorded a career-best time of 17:17.02 in the event, good for a sixth-place finish.  The sophomore also recorded a career-best and ‘B' cut time of 1:53.76 in the 200-yard freestyle, a ‘B' cut time of 5:07.63 in the 500-yard freestyle, and a personal-best time of 53.72 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle, helping the second-ranked Eagles to a fifth-place finish.

(Dec. 8) Emory University's Claire Pavlak recorded two NCAA ‘A' cut times and eight ‘B' cut times at the Miami University Invitational.  Pavlak recorded a pair of ‘A' cut times in the 50-yard freestyle, swimming a mark of 23.61 seconds in the preliminaries, and 23.60 seconds in the finals, good for a third-place finish.  The freshman helped set a school record as part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team, as the squad swam a ‘B' cut time of 1:35.44.  Pavlak also recorded ‘B' cut marks in the 100-yard backstroke, the 100-yard freestyle, and as part of the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relay teams, helping the second-ranked Eagles to a fifth-place finish.


(Nov. 24) Emory University freshman Claire Pavlak recorded two NCAA ‘B' cut times during the Eagles' dual meet against Division I's top-ranked team, the University of Georgia.  Pavlak recorded a personal-best time in the 50-yard freestyle, swimming a provisional qualifying mark of 24.29 seconds in the event.  The freshman was also part of Emory's 200-yard medley relay team, which finished fifth in the event with a ‘B' Cut time of 1:48.93.  Pavlak finished the meet with a seventh-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, swimming a time of 53.80.


(Nov. 17) Emory University's Liz Horvat recorded four NCAA ‘B' cut times and two first-place finishes while competing at the Emory Fall Invitational.  Horvat opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle in a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 5:04.24.  The sophomore later recorded ‘B' cut times of 4:33.89 in the 400-yard individual medley, and 17:25.25 in the 1,650-yard freestyle, finishing second in both events.  Horvat was also part of the Eagles' first-place 800-yard freestyle relay team, which recording a provisional qualifying time of 7:45.93. 


(Nov. 10) Emory University's Anne Culpepper recorded a NCAA ‘B' Cut time during the Eagles' dual-meet victory over the Savannah College of Art and Design.  Culpepper won the 500-yard freestyle with a provisional qualifying time of 5:07.12, the second-fastest time by an Eagle this season.  The freshman also finished third in the 1000-yard freestyle, swimming a time of 10:40.52.  Culpepper helped the Eagles defeat SCAD 127-81 during the meet.


(Nov. 3) Emory University's Tess Pasternak recorded two first-place finishes and a ‘B' Cut time during the Eagles' 130-113 victory over Division I Davidson College.  Pasternak won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:08.61, her second provisional qualifying time in the event this season.  The senior was also part of Emory's 400-yard medley relay, which finished first in a time of 4:01.95.  Pasternak concluded her day with a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley.  Her 13.75 points scored helped the Eagles improve to 1-1 in dual meets this season.


(Oct. 27) Emory University's Ruth Westby swept the freestyle sprint events during the Eagles' dual meet loss to the Division I University of North Carolina - Wilmington.  Westby won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.05 seconds, the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 52.61 seconds, and the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:55.59.  All three of the junior's times were NCAA Division III ‘B' cut qualifying marks.  Westby, the 2008 National Champion in the 50-yard freestyle, scored 28 points in the Eagles' 152-148 loss to the Seahawks.    

(Oct. 27) Emory University's Marie Kim recorded a NCAA provisional qualifying time and two first-place finishes during the Eagles' dual meet against the University of North Carolina - Wilmington.  Kim's time of 2:25.88 in the 200-yard breaststroke was good for both a first-place finish in the event, and an NCAA ‘B' cut qualifying time.  The sophomore also recorded a top-finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:07.80, less than a second off of her career-best time.  Kim scored 21 points during the Eagles' 152-148 loss to the Seahawks.
