2008-09 Women's Swimming & Diving Season Recap

It was a season of broken records and honors for the Emory University women's swimming and diving team in 2009, as the Eagles finished second in the nation, first in the conference, and saw its members record three individual National Championships and two National Championships in relay events.

Emory sophomore Liz Horvat completed one of the best meets in Division III history, winning Swimmer of the Year honors at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.  Horvat matched a program record by winning four National Championships during the meet, including three in individual events - the 500-yard freestyle, 1,650-yard freestyle and 400-yard individual medley.  Horvat also teamed with junior Ruth Westby, sophomore Katie Mroz and senior Mary Tripp to win a National Championship in the 800-yard freestyle relay.  Horvat set Division III records in all four of her championship performances.

Also winning a National Championship for the Eagles was their 200-yard freestyle relay team of Westby, junior Lillian Ciardelli, sophomore Morgan Klinzing, and freshman Claire Pavlak, which set a Division III record in the process.  Westby finished the meet with seven all-America certificates, giving the junior a school-record 20 for her career.  Ciardelli also earned seven all-America honors during the meet, while senior Tess Pasternak won four, including individual all-America honors in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke, becoming the first Eagle to win all-America honors in two individual events during all four years of eligibility.

Emory head coach Jon Howell was named the NCAA Division III Women's Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year in 2009, based on his team's performance at the championship meet.

The Eagles won their 11th-consecutive conference title, and 17th overall, while competing at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships in 2009.  Emory totaled 1,876.5 points during the meet, besting the second-place team by more than 400 points.  Leading the way at the meet for Emory were Horvat and Westby, who claimed four conference-championships apiece.  In addition, Ciardelli walked away from the meet with three conference championships, while Pasternak and freshman Jennifer Aronoff each won two.

The Eagles finished the regular season with a record of 6-3 in dual meets, including a mark of 5-0 against non-Division I schools.  Emory also finished fifth out of nine teams and first among non-Division I squads, at the Miami (Ohio) Invitational.
