Emory University junior and reigning Division III Swimmer of the
Year Liz Horvat led a group of six Eagles who
competed during day one of the Miami Invitational, winning the
1,650-yard freestyle at the meet.
Horvat's time of 16:44.23 (good for the first NCAA ‘A' cut
time of the season by an Eagle) was the second-fastest time in
school history, falling just over 14 seconds shy of her
school-record time set at last year's NCAA Championship meet.
She finished 19.40 seconds ahead of the next-closest swimmer in the
field, which consisted mostly of Division I competition.
Emory junior Amy Minowitz also recorded an
‘A' cut time during the event, finishing sixth with a mark of
17:10.61, just under six seconds shy of her career-best time.
Sophomore Anne Culpepper (17:20.90) and senior
Natty Chalermpalanupap (17:38.59) each recorded
‘B' cut marks, finishing 11th and 14th,
respectively.
Competing in just the one event during the first session, the
Eagles finished the day in fifth place out of eight teams with 95
points scored.
The Emory men had just two competitors during the first day, with
Paul Weinstein leading the way with a third-place
finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle. The sophomore's time of
15:54.50 was good for a ‘B' cut time, and his third-place
finish earned the Eagles 29 points. Sophomore Joel
Dobben finished 12th in the event with a time
of 16:35.31, earning the squad 17 points.
Emory's 46 points between the two swimmers placed the Eagles in
sixth place at the meet after one session.
Action at the Miami Invitational will resume with the second
session at 9:00 am on Friday, followed by the third session of the
meet at 6:00 pm on Friday.
