Emory Drops Dual Meet Finales to Division I Auburn

Facing one of the top NCAA Division I programs in the nation in their final dual meet of the season, the Emory University swimming & diving teams dropped a pair of decisions to Auburn University on Saturday afternoon.

The top-ranked Emory women fell to eighth-ranked Auburn University 172 - 102, while the fourth-ranked Emory men lost 174 - 100 to the fifth-ranked Tigers.

Despite the loss, the Emory women were able to 15 NCAA ‘B' cut times and a first-place finish during the meet.  Freshman Claire Pavlak recorded the lone top finish, coming in first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.96 seconds.  Following close behind Pavlak with provisional qualifying times in the event were senior Lillian Ciardelli (2nd, 24.05 seconds) and freshman Ann Wolber (4th, 24.05).

The Emory women also recorded three provisional times in two other events - the 100-yard breaststroke (April Whitley, Kacie Baker and Jennifer Aronoff) and the 200-yard freestyle (Ruth Westby, Amy Minowitz and Whitley Taylor).  Also recording NCAA ‘B' cut times in individual events were Eileen Shi (100 Back), Leslie Hackler (100 Fly), Westby (100 Free), Anne Culpepper (500 Free) and Liz Horvat (500 Free).  Emory's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Shi, Westby, Ciardelli and Pavlak also recorded a provisional qualifying mark.

On the men's side, senior John Petroff recorded Emory's only first-place finish and ‘B' cut time in the swimming events, finishing first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.76 seconds.
In the one-meter dive, two Eagles reached NCAA qualifying scores.  Sophomore Daniel Kolb finished third in the event with a score of 282.90, while sophomore Patrick Brady just cleared the qualifying mark with a score of 275.77, good for fourth place in the event.

The Emory men finished the season with a 5-4 record in dual meets, while the women ended the campaign with a mark of 6-4.  The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday, February 17th, as Emory will host the 2010 University Athletic Association Championships at the Woodruff P.E. Center.
