2010-11 Season Recap: Emory Women’s Swimming & Diving

2010-11 Season Recap: Emory Women’s Swimming & Diving

The Emory University women’s swimming and diving team successfully defended its national title during the 2010-11 season, repeating as the NCAA Division III Champion for the second time in the program’s history.

The Eagles turned in another strong performance at the NCAA Championships in Knoxville, TN, claiming the program’s fourth Division III title by scoring 614 points, besting second-place Denison University by 186 points.  The team title was the 12th in the history of the Emory athletics program.

A number of Eagles stood out individually at the NCAA Championships.  Senior April Whitley led the team with a program-record tying four National Titles, including school-record performances en route to victories in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke.  Whitley, along with freshman Sadie Nennig, sophomore Leslie Hackler and junior Claire Pavlak, comprised the Eagles’ National Champion 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays teams, setting a Division III record in the latter (3:42.82) and a school-record in the former.  Junior Anne Culpepper successfully defended her National Championship in the 200-yard backstroke with a school-record time in the finals, and was part of the Eagles’ winning 400-yard freestyle relay team along with sophomore Ann Wolber, freshman Suzanne Lemberg, and Pavlak.

The three National Championships during the meet won by Pavlak give her six for her career, the most in the history of the Emory Swimming and Diving program.  The six Championships won by Emory women during the meet (three in individual events and three relays) marked the most in one season in school history.  Head coach Jon Howell earned NCAA Division III Swimming Coach of the Year honors for his work during the year.

Senior Liz Horvat wrapped up her Emory career with 17 all-America certificates, including four at the 2011 Championships.  Horvat claimed second in the 1,650-yard freestyle, 400-yard individual medley and as part of the 800-yard freestyle relay team, while taking third-place in the 500-yard freestyle.  All together, 13 Emory women combined to record 20 all-America finishes in individual events and five in relays at the NCAA Championships, while setting school records in 11 events.

Earlier in the season, Horvat led the Eagles to their 13th-consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, becoming just the third swimmer since 2000 to repeat as the conference Swimmer of the Year.  She won the 500-yard freestyle, 1,650-yard freestyle and 400-yard individual medley, capping off an incredible conference career during which she swept the three distance events all four years.  The Eagles totaled 10 individual and five relay championships at the UAA Championships.  In addition, Emory’s coaching staff was named the UAA’s Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year for the sixth time in school history.

During the regular season, the Eagles compiled a 4-4 record in dual meets, with the team’s four losses during the season all coming against Division I squads.  Emory finished second out of eight teams at the prestigious Miami University (Ohio) Invitational, and first of six teams at the Emory Fall Invitational.

Emory also earned Scholar all-America team recognition for the fall semester after recording a team GPA of 3.52, the fourth-highest among Division III women’s squads.  In addition, both Horvat and Amy Minowitz were awarded the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, while Culpepper was named a Capital One Academic All-America and All-District First Team honoree.
