Eagles Strong in Final Tune-Up for the NCAA D-III Swimming & Diving Championships

In the team's final meet before March's NCAA Division III Championships, the Emory University swimming and diving team sent a select group of members to the Bulldog Last Chance Meet in Athens, GA, who recorded a number of NCAA qualifying times.

On the first day of the two-day meet, hosted by the University of Georgia, Emory saw its men's swimmers record 16 NCAA 'B' cut times and its women notch 11 'B' cut marks.

Four Emory men had 'B' cut performances in the 100-yard backstroke, as freshman A.J. Khosla finished fifth in the finals with a time of 50.93 seconds, junior Zeke Van Keuren finished sixth with a time of 51.43 seconds, and junior Jared Dubnow finished seventh with a mark of 51.89 seconds.  In addition, freshman Darrell Eacret swam a 'B' cut time of 51.85 seconds in the 100 back time trials, after also recording a provisional time in the preliminaries of the 500-yard freestyle with a mark of 4:32.52.

In the 200-yard individual medley, both junior Ben Redpath (1:53.54) had a 'B' cut finish, while junior Bryant Jones also swam a provisional mark (4:02.76) in the 400-yard individual medley.  Sophomore Jeff Simpson (1:40.40) and senior Justin Leemis (1:41.86) both had 'B' cut times in the 200-yard freestyle.

For the women on the first day, freshman Kylie McKenzie had 'B' cut times in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.40), the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.41) and the time trials of the 100-yard butterfly (57.60 seconds).  Adding a pair of provisional times was freshman Micah Sims, who had 'B' cut performances in both the 400-yard individual medley (4:33.73) and the 100-yard backstroke (58.52 seconds). 

Other provisional qualifiers for the women on the first day included sophomore Theresa Gallagher in the 400-yard individual medley (4:28.17), freshman Ellen Schafer in the preliminaries of the 50-yard freestyle (24.07 seconds), freshman Adelaide Taylor in the 100-yard butterfly (57.69 seconds), freshman Jennifer Pak in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.40), freshman Roxanne Capron in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.42), and senior Marie Kim in the 100-yard butterfly (56.88 seconds).

For the Emory women on the second day, McKenzie recorded an 'A' cut time of 2:20.00 in the time trials of the 200-yard breaststroke, while also recording a 'B' cut time of 2:05.81 in the 200-yard butterfly.  Meanwhile, Sims had an 'A' cut time of 2:03.59 in the 200-yard backstroke.

Other members of the Emory women's team that recorded 'B' cut times included Kim in the 200-yard breaststroke preliminaries (2:24.44) and 100-yard breaststroke time trials (1:06.44), Schafer in the 50-yard freestyle time trials (23.99 seconds), and Samantha Neumann in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.19).

For the men on day two, Simpson notched 'B' cut times in the time trials of the 100-yard freestyle (46.03 seconds) and 200-yard freestyle (1:41.47), while Redpath had provisional times in both the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.90) and the 200-yard individual medley time trials (1:54.36).

Other 'B' cut times for the men during the second day of the meet included Dubnow's time of 1:50.80 in the preliminaries of the 200-yard backstroke, senior Mark Bernstein's mark of 16:01.13 in the 1,650-yard freestyle, and Jones' time of 1:52.64 in the preliminaries of the 200-yard butterfly.

Emory will now await the announcement of the selections for the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, scheduled to be released on Thursday, March 3rd at 5:00 PM.  The NCAA Championships, to be held in Knoxville, TN, will begin on Wednesday, March 23rd.
