Emory Men Win Miami Invitational; Women Finish Second

The Emory University swimming team wrapped up the 2012 portion of its season schedule in grand fashion this weekend, with the men winning the team competition at the Miami (Ohio) Invitational, and the women placing second, in a field that consisted of mostly NCAA Division I squads.

The men scored 1,772.5 points during the three-day meet, finishing ahead of second-place Denison University (1,687.5 points), the two-time reigning NCAA Division III Champion.  Emory's women registered 1,459.5 points, trailing only host Miami (2,753.5 points) in the standings by the end of competition.

The most impressive performance of the meet came from the Eagles' men's 200-yard freestyle relay team of junior Jake Stephens, senior Richard Upton, junior Ryan Bass and junior Ross Spock, which for the second-straight year set a meet record in the event with a time of 1:20.84.  The mark was good for an automatic NCAA qualifying time, and also surpassed the previous school record of 1:20.93, set by the Eagles at last year's NCAA Championships.

The 200-yard freestyle relay proved to just be the start of a big weekend for Bass, who also won the 50-yard freestyle with an NCAA 'A' cut time of 20.38 seconds, just a hundredth of a second off his own school record.  Bass was also a part of Emory's 'A' cut 200-yard medley relay team (along with Spock, senior Peter O'Brien and senior Stephen Czaja), which won the event with a time of 1:30.01, and recorded a 'B' cut in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.94, good for an eighth place finish.

Senior Miller Douglas added an automatic qualifying time in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:48.38 during the preliminaries of the event, eventually winning the finals.  Peter O'Brien picked up the final 'A' cut of the meet for the Emory men, finishing second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:50.34.

Swimmers on the Emory men's team also accounted for 36 'B' cut times during the course of competition at the Miami Invitational.

For the Emory women, junior Sadie Nennig recorded a pair of 'A' cut times in individual events.  In the 200-yard backstroke, Nennig finished sixth with an automatic qualifying time of 2:00.75.  Later in the weekend, she finished seventh in the 200-yard individual medley after recording an 'A' cut time of 2:04.60 in the preliminaries of the event.

Emory's other individual 'A' cut time was registered by Nancy Larson in the 100-yard freestyle, as the sophomore finished second with a time of 50.59 seconds.  Larson also swam on the Eagles' 400-yard freestyle relay with senior Renee Rosenkranz, senior Anna Dobben and senior Ann Wolber, finishing second with an 'A' cut time of 3:23.54.

The Emory women's squad totaled 53 'B' cut times as well during the meet.

Emory also had a second contingent of swimmers in action at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational this weekend, where the Emory men scored 270 points to finish fourth out of six teams, and the women registered 172 points to finish seventh out of nine squads.  Recording 'B' cut times at the meet were freshman Carolyn Bonfield in the 500-yard freestyle (5:01.85, 13th place) and junior Suzanne Lemberg in the 100-yard freestyle preliminaries (52.08 seconds, 19th place).

With finals and the winter break approaching, the Eagles will now take a five-week hiatus from intercollegiate competition, resuming their schedule on January 10th, 2013 at the University of Tampa at 3:00 PM.
