2012-13 Emory Women’s Swimming & Diving Season Recap

2012-13 Emory Women’s Swimming & Diving Season Recap

The Emory University Women's Swimming and Diving Team continued to cement its position as one of the top programs in all of Division III, highlighting its 2012-13 season by winning its fourth-consecutive National Title and sixth overall at the 2013 NCAA Championships.

The Eagles registered another resounding victory at the NCAA Championships, scoring a total of 619 points to best second-place Kenyon College by 136 points.  Emory's point total during the meet was the team's second-highest ever during NCAA competition, short only of the 639 points scored at the 2012 championship meet.  It was the sixth National Championship in the program's history (2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013) and the 15th NCAA Championship in the history of Emory Athletics.

Emory claimed National Titles in two events at the NCAA Championships, with the combination of senior Anna Dobben, sophomore Nancy Larson, senior Renee Rosenkranz and senior Ann Wolber winning both the 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relay.  The Eagles' quartet won the latter event in a time of 3:21.28, setting a new NCAA Division III record.  The Emory Women's Swimming and Diving team has now won 13 National Championships in relay events, and 38 total National Championships in the program's history.  Wolber ended her Emory career with six National Championships, the second-most in Emory history.

Along with the two National Championships, Emory swimmers totaled 26 All-America honors in individual events and five in relays for a total of 46 all-America certificates.  Dobben , Larson and Rosenkranz led all Emory swimmers with six all-America honors apiece, while junior Sadie Nennig added five, giving her 15 during her three-year career (the sixth-most in Emory history).  Top individual finishes for Emory included Dobben's second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle and sophomore Michelle York's third-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley.  The Eagles also accumulated 15 all-America honorable mention certificates during the meet.

In addition to the national record-setting performance by the 400-yard freestyle relay team, two other program records fell at the 2013 NCAA Championships.  Dobben became the first Emory woman to break the 55-second mark in the 100-yard backstroke, recording a time of 54.84 seconds in the event.  Sophomore Nina Zook set a new program record in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.86.

At the 2013 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, hosted by the University of Chicago, Emory claimed its 15th-consecutive conference title and 21st overall in the 26-year history of league competition.  Emory swimmers amassed 15 UAA Championships and 29 all-conference finishes, including five titles and six all-UAA honors for Dobben, who became the fourth-straight Eagle and 14th overall to be named the UAA Women's Swimmer of the Year.  Freshman Elizabeth Aronoff, who won the 100-yard breaststroke and finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke, was named the conference Women's Rookie of the Year, while the Eagles' coaches garnered Women's Coaching Staff of the Year honors for the second-straight season and sixth time overall.

Emory finished the dual meet season with an overall record of 4-3, including wins over Division I UNC-Wilmington, and Division II Florida Southern and Tampa.  Each of the squad's three losses came against top-flight Division I opponents – Georgia of the SEC and Florida State and Georgia Tech of the ACC.  In championship-style meets during the season, the Eagles finished second out of ten teams at the Miami Invitational, seventh out of nine teams with a limited squad at the Georgia Tech Invitational, and second out of eight teams at the Midwest Invitational.

A number of Emory swimmers received recognition for their work in the classroom, as well as the pool, following the 2012-13 season.  Seniors Mia Michalak and Ann Wolber each received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, one of the most prestigious academic awards presented by the NCAA.  Wolber joined Anna Dobben on the Capital One Academic All-America First Team.
