2014-15 Emory Women’s Swimming & Diving Season Recap

2014-15 Emory Women’s Swimming & Diving Season Recap

The Emory University women's swimming and diving team won its sixth-consecutive NCAA Division III Championship and the eighth overall in the program's history during the 2014-15 campaign.

Led by National Championships from senior McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg in the 200-yard butterfly and the 400-yard medley relay team of junior Ellie Thompson, junior Elizabeth Aronoff, senior Nina Zook and senior Nancy Larson, the Eagles totaled 603 points at the meet to best second-place Denison University by 145.5 points, the team's largest margin of victory at the meet since 2012.  Eagle swimmers amassed 26 individual All-America honors, five relay all-America finishes and 14 All-America honorable mentions, with school-records being set by Newsum-Schoenberg in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.43), the 400-yard medley relay (3:41.44) and the 800-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Julia Wawer, freshman Cindy Cheng, junior Carolyn Bonfield and sophomore Marissa Bergh (7:19.01).

Larson led the Eagles with six all-America honors during the meet, including individual certificates in the 100-yard freestyle (5th) and the 200-yard freestyle (8th), and ended her Emory career tied for second in school history with 20 career all-America certificates.  Bergh added an addition four all-America certificates, pushing her career total to 10 through her first two seasons on the team.

Earlier in the season, Emory claimed its 17th-consecutive University Athletic Association Championship, finishing the meet with 2,076.5 points, the third-most ever by a team in the history of the championships.  The Eagles, who hosted the meet at the Madeleine Jude Brown Aquatic Center at the Woodruff Physical Education Center, were 729 points better than second-place finisher Washington (Mo.), as the squad totaled UAA Championships in 16 events, while claiming 25 individual and five relay all-UAA finishes.

Newsum-Schoenberg was named the UAA Swimmer of the Year, after winning UAA Championships in both the 500-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle, while setting new conference records in both the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.13) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.52 in the preliminaries).  Wawer received UAA Rookie of the Year honors, following her win in the 200-yard freestyle in a UAA record mark (1:50.60) and a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle.  In addition, the Eagles' coaches, led by Head Coach Jon Howell, was named the UAA Women's Coaching Staff of the Year for the second-straight season and the eighth time in the program's history.

In other championship-style meets during the year, Emory finished fourth among seven teams at the Miami Invitational in December, and first at the Emory Invitational in February.

The Eagles finished their dual meet season with an 8-1 overall record, marking the most wins in a season by the squad since the 2007-08 campaign, and the fewest losses in a year since the 2000-01 season.  Included in the team's record was a 7-0 mark against non-Division I opponents, and a 157-131 win against the Division I University of North Carolina – Wilmington.  Emory's only loss during the year came against the University of Georgia, which finished second at the 2015 NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships.

Emory also had a contingent of swimmers competing at the Arena Pro Swim Series at Austin, hosted by the University of Texas.  At the long course meters meet, highlights included a 26th-place finish in the 100-meter backstroke and a 29th-place finish 200-meter backstroke from Thompson, and a 20th-place finish by Newsum-Schoenberg in the 200-meter butterfly.

In addition to the team's success in the pool, a number of Eagles received recognition for their academic achievements as well.  Four Emory women's senior swimmers were selected to receive the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship – Larson, Newsum-Schoenberg, Michelle York and Zook.  Aronoff received Capital One Academic All-America recognition for the second-straight year, becoming the 10th first team honoree in the program's history, while Newsum-Schoenberg was named to the third team.
