Marissa Bergh, Oliver Smith Garner Final UAA Swimmers of the Week Awards

Junior Marissa Bergh and sophomore Oliver Smith from the Emory University Swimming & Diving teams were named the final University Athletic Association Swimmers of the Week for the 2015-16 season. Bergh helped lead the Eagles to their seventh consecutive National Champion while Smith helped the Emory to its 13th top-3 finish in program history. It is the second time Smith has been the UAA Swimmer of the Week this season while this marks thie first such honor for Bergh.

At the Championship meet, Bergh led the Emory women's team with six All-America certificates at the 2016 NCAA Championships and swam the anchor leg in four of the Eagles' five relay National Championship teams: the 200, 400, 800 Freestyle and the 400 Medley. The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Bergh, freshman Fiona Muir, junior Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe and freshman Meg Taylor set a new National record in the event with a time of 1:31.42. Bergh also had two individual All-America honors in the 50 Free (6th, 23.20) and 100 Free (8th, 51.53) and was an All-America Honorable Mention in the 200 Free (16th, 1:56.62).

Smith had a terrific NCAA Championship meet for the Eagles. Smith won the 50 Freestyle National Championship on Wednesday with a school record time of 19.55 before swimming the anchor leg in Emory's two relay national titles; the 200 and 400 Freestyle Relays. He added All-America honors in the 100 Freestyle on Saturday, setting a new school record in the event with a time of 44.43 during preliminaries and was part of the 200 Medley Relay which placed third, touching at 1:28.98. And on Sunday, Smith made the Olympic Team trials cut in the 50 Free, swimming a long-course time of 23.29. He will compete next in Omaha, Neb. on July 1st and 2nd for a chance to make the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team.
