Emory Swimming Splits Dual Meet at Florida Southern

Emory University swimmers returned to the pool Friday afternoon after a month-long hiatus to face Division II’s Florida Southern College in a dual meet in Lakeland, FL. The Eagles split the meet with the women’s team edging out the Mocs, 135-54, while the men came up short to FSC, 113-92.

For the women, the Eagles captured event wins in all 11 events contested at the meet. Junior Lucy Daro and sophomore Clio Hancock headlined the team with the pair each winning two individual events. Daro was a winner in the 200 Freestyle at 1:56.28 as well as in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 52.59. Hancock recorded wins in the 200 IM, swimming a time of 2:09.84, before posting a mark of 5:11.84 to take top honors in the 500 Freestyle.

Other solo winners for the Emory women included sophomore Edie Bates in 1000 Freestyle (10:35.46), sophomore Taylor Leone in the 50 Freestyle (24.25), sophomore Allie Dixon in the 200 Butterfly (2:06.55), freshman Savannah Sowards in the 200 Backstroke (2:06.34) and sophomore Lauren Salgado in the 200 Breaststroke (2:26.42).

Sowards added a win as part of the 200 Medley Relay along with freshman Anna Glowniak, Caroline Maki and senior Caroline Olson as the group combined to record winning time of 1:48.50. Maki and Olson aided the Eagles to a win in the 400 Freestyle Relay, teaming with Daro and Leone to claim the final event of the meet in a time of 3:33.88.

The Emory men saw three event wins on its side of the meet with junior Chris Nicholson and freshman Nicholas Goudie capturing individual victories for the Eagles in freestyle events. Goudie triumphed in the 50 Free at 21.27 with Nicholson earning top billing in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 46.66. The duo added a win during the 200 Medley Relay, teaming with sophomores Tyler Russell and Hwa Min Sim to register a mark of 1:33.24.

In addition to the three wins, the men turned in six second place showings: freshman Alex Webster in the 1000 Freestyle (9:41.54), junior Kellen Stillman in the 200 Freestyle (1:42.94), sophomore Sean Byman in the 200 IM (1:55.86), sophomore Pat Pema in the 500 Freestyle (4:41.33), sophomore Jason Hamilton in the 200 Breaststroke (2:09.64) and the 400 Freestyle Relay team featuring Stillman, freshmen Ryan Soh, Jeffrey de Groot and sophomore Will Schuler (3:13.42).

Emory will be back at the Woodruff PE Center next Saturday in a tri-meet against West Florida and Delta State. Prior to the start of the match at 10:00 AM, the Eagles will honor its seniors with a pre-meet ceremony.
