Men Finish Third, Women Take Fourth at SCAD Invitational

Members of the Emory University swimming and diving teams competed at the SCAD Invitational this past weekend in Savannah, GA. The Emory men placed third at the meet with 699 points and on the women’s side, the Eagles took fourth with 583.5 points. The Eagles claimed three event wins during the meet and recorded nine NCAA B Cuts.

Winning events for the Eagles were freshman Willem Goedecke, junior Maly Shores and the men’s 800 Freestyle Relay team. Shores turned in a time of 5:05.34 to earn the top spot in the 500 Freestyle with the 800 Free Relay squad of freshman Steven Kuhn, sophomore Will Schuler, sophomore Ethan Sternberg and senior Connor McCourt posting a winning and NCAA B Cut mark of 6:44.14 on Thursday. Goedecke was a winner on the final day of competition, taking home the win in the 200 Backstroke with a NCAA B Cut of 1:49.00 (1:48.94 – prelims).

Adding NCAA B Cuts for the men were Schuler in the 200 IM (3rd, 1:50.80), sophomore Jack Kelleher in the 400 IM (3rd, 3:59.14; 3:59.12 – prelims) and Kuhn in the 200 Breaststroke (5th, 2:03.75; 2:03.49 – prelims).

For the women, freshman Allie MacMillan placed third in the 400 IM with a NCAA B Cut of 4:30.76 and in the 200 Backstroke, junior Bethany Seagraves and freshman Katerina Savvides finished second and third with NCAA B Cuts of 56.56 and 56.73. Sophomore Lauren Salgado rounded out the NCAA qualifying performers with her second-place finish in the 200 Breaststroke (2:20.82).

The Eagles will be back in the pool when the calendar flips to 2020 as the team takes on Florida Southern on January 10th.
