Women's Swimming & Diving Claims Five Event Titles, Sets Four UAA Records on Day Two

Thursday marked the beginning of the swimming portion of the 2022 University Athletic Association Championships with the Emory University women's swimming & diving program getting off to a fantastic start, going 5-for-5 in event championships and established four new UAA meet records.

Following the Eagles tremendous start, Emory leads the meet through two days of action with 660 points. New York University sits second with 490 points with the University of Chicago not far behind in third at 487 points.

The evening led off with the Eagles' 200 Freestyle Relay team of juniors Sammie Kass, Caroline Maki and seniors Zoe Walker, Taylor Leone taking first with a UAA record time of 1:31.74, marking the ninth consecutive meet an Emory team has won the event.

Later in the night, all four members of the 200 Free Relay paced the Eagles in the 50 Freestyle as Emory had five of the top-8 finishers including the top four. After setting the UAA record in prelims, Leone bested her time by .01 seconds in the finals as she won her second straight conference title with a time of 22.97. Maki and Kass rounded out the Eagles' All-UAA performers in the 50 with Maki earning silver at 23.10 and Kass taking bronze at 23.36.

Another UAA record fell in the 200 IM as senior Clio Hancock first broke the record in prelims at 2:02.84 before throwing down a winning time of 2:02.44 in the finals, representing Hancock's first career win in the event. Graduate student Marianne Allard added All-UAA honors, placing third in the event with her time of 2:04.62. Sophomore Fiona Arwood and junior Allie MacMillan rounded out the top-five in the 200 IM with Arwood coming in fourth at 2:05.64 and MacMillan taking fifth at 2:06.09.

Sophomore Penelope Helm was the Eagles' third individual champion on Thursday as she touched first in the 500 Freestyle at 4:55.70, nearly three seconds faster than her prelim time.

The night concluded with Emory's fifth event title which came in the 400 Medley Relay as Leone, Maki, sophomore Megan Jungers and senior Edie Bates posted a blistering 3:40.63, the fourth UAA record set by the Emory women. The Eagles have now won the 400 Medley Relay in 13 of the last 14 conference meets.

The 2022 UAA Championships from Atlanta, GA continues Friday with the 200 Medley Relay, 400 IM, 100 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Backstroke, 800 Freestyle Relay and women's 3-meter diving.
