Emory Women Remain in Third After Day Two of NCAAs

The Emory University women's swimming & diving team registered two national runner-up finishes on the second day of the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, IN.

As a team, the Eagles turned in five All-America performances, three All-America Honorable Mentions and recorded three school records Thursday night. Following two days of competition, Emory stands in third place at 215 points, trailing first-place Kenyon with 248 points and second-place Denison with 245.5.

Emory's two national runner-up showings came in the relay events as both races were among some of the fastest seen so far at the 2022 National Championships.

In the 200 Freestyle Relay, Caroline Maki, Cailen Chinn, Zoe Walker and Taylor Leone surpassed the previous Division III record (1:30.52) but were edged out to the wall by Kenyon. Chinn had a strong second leg with her 22.62 split but Kenyon moved in front in the third leg with Crile Hart's 21.98. It came down to the anchors as Leone and Emmie Mirus, last night's top two finishers in the 50 Free, went toe-to-toe. Leone gave an incredible effort with a 22.15 split but ran out of real estate to catch Mirus as Kenyon won at 1:30.39 ahead of the Eagles' 1:30.44.

At the end of the night, the Eagles and Ladies duked it out one more time in the finals of the 400 Medley Relay with both sides once again going under the previous Division III record time (3:39.57), the third relay event both programs have done that in so far this week. Unfortunately, it was Kenyon's group that came out on top with their time of 3:38.05, narrowly beating Emory's team of Maki, Leone, Megan Jungers and Edie Bates (3:38.38).

Leone and Jungers added All-America honors in the 100 Fly with Leone taking third overall at 54.40 and Jungers finishing fifth at 54.90. During prelims, Leone topped her previous school record as she recorded the fastest preliminary time of the morning at 54.14. Senior Clio Hancock claimed her second individual All-America honor of the meet as she led Emory participants in the 400 IM, taking fourth with a time of 4:21.20.

Three Eagles earned All-America Honorable Mention honors to round out the top performers on Thursday. Diver Tess Klugherz came in 10th place in the 1-meter with her consolation final score of 404.70. Allie MacMillan and Savannah Sowards each turned in 15th place efforts in their respective events with MacMillan in the 400 IM (4:29.35) and Sowards in the 100 Fly (56.06).

Emory looks to make up some group as the NCAA Championships continue Friday with an event slate featuring the 200 Butterfly, 100 Backstroke, 100 Breaststroke, 800 Freestyle Relay and men's one-meter diving. Prelims get underway at 10:00 AM with finals to follow at 6:00 PM.
