2022-23 Women's Swimming & Diving Season Recap

2022-23 Women's Swimming & Diving Season Recap

The Emory University women's swimming & diving team maintained its place as one of the top programs in the country, posting another top-two finish nationally to end the 2022-23 season.

For the second straight NCAA Championships, the Eagles finished as the national runner-up after scoring 385 compared to Denison University's 464.5 as the Bid Red claimed its first team title since 2001.

Over the four-day national meet, the Eagles saw national championships won in three events while securing 17 All-America First Team and 10 All-America Second Team honors. The second place finish is the 21st-straight meet the Eagles have finished among the top four teams at the meet and is the fourth national runner-up finish in team history.

Sophomore Ariana Khan headlined the team at the NCAA Championships as she became the first women's diver to win a national title in over 30 years, winning the 3-meter event. She, along with Diving Coach Tomsaz Rossa, earned two of the prominent awards of the meet as both were named the Diver and Coach of the Year by the CSCAA. Khan is the first diver in program history, for either the women or men, to earn the prestigious award.

In addition to Khan, the Eagles won relay national championships to highlight the national meet. Megan Jungers, Anna Glowniak, Taylor Leone and Caroline Maki made history in the 200 Medley as the group set a new Division III record at 1:39.59. Leone and Maki added a national title the following evening as they teamed with Penny Celtnieks and Sammie Kass for gold in the 200 Freestyle.

Leone and Maki, the two unsung leaders in the pool over the duration of the season, finished the national meet as the All-America leaders with seven each.

The duo paced the team to its 24th consecutive UAA championship a month prior with Maki taking home UAA Swimmer of the Year honors, just as Leone did at the 2022 conference championships. Maki became the 12th Eagles to win the honor over the last 13 UAA meets after winning six event championships and setting UAA records in three different events.

All told at the UAA Championships, the Eagles won 11 event titles and had 22 All-UAA performances as Emory won comfortably with 1,872 points compared to Chicago's second place total of 1,638.

At the conclusion of the meet the coaching staff of Jon Howell, Cindy Fontana, John Petroff, Bob Hackett and Rossa as they were named the Women's Coaching Staff of the Year, representing the 13th time Howell and his staff has earned the women's award.

Furthermore, notable Eagles were recognized for their academic pedigree to go along with their success in the pool. Leone was one of three swimmers to garner a spot on the Academic All-America First Team by the College Sports Communicators (CSC), joining Maki and Sloane Donovan, as well as became the sixth Emory Eagle to ever be named the National Academic All-American of the Year for their respective sport.

Maki also was honored as one of eight student-athletes to be chosen as Emory 100 Senior Honorary recipients and one of three on the team to be chosen for the honor along with Glowniak and Rose Gertzman. Furthermore, the Eagles saw 21 athletes chosen as CSCAA Scholar All-Americans, including 18 on the First Team.
