Swimming & Diving Opens Season at Georgia Tech

Following the annual Blue-Gold intrasquad meet on Friday, the Emory University swimming & diving teams officially opened their seasons Saturday afternoon crosstown against Georgia Tech at the McAuley Aquatic Center.

The Yellow Jackets swept the meet, winning 161-78 on the men’s side and 178-63 on the women’s side, however the Eagles still put forth notable performances across the debut meet including three event wins.

Junior Nicholas Goudie paced the Emory men, winning both individual events he competed in with times of 20.99 in the 50 Freestyle and 46.03 in the 100 Freestyle and swam the anchor leg in the Eagles’ second place finish in the 200 Medley Relay, posting a time of 1:32.09 with senior Ryan Soh, graduate student Jason Hamilton and sophomore Jeff Echols.

For the women, graduate student Taylor Leone continued where she left off and captured the 50 Freestyle win with a time of 24.09 and was part of the top relay teams in the 200 Medley Relay with junior Megan Jungers, fellow grad student Marianne Allard and senior Caroline Maki (1:47.74) and in the 400 Freestyle with Maki, senior Sammie Kass and freshman Claire DePiero (3:35.30).

In the diving events, senior Lucas Bumgarner recorded second place finishes with his scores of 362.40 in the 1-meter and 390.23 in the 3-meter while junior Tess Klugherz paced the Eagles in the women’s events, taking third in the 3-meter at 252.38 and fourth in the 1-meter at 226.35.

For the men, they saw five additional top-three individual finishes with senior Pat Pema in the 200 Freestyle (3rd, 1:41.58), sophomore Crow Throsen in the 400 IM (3rd, 4:00.04), Echols (2nd, 1:54.12) and sophomore Dylan Yin (3rd, 1:56.79) in the 200 Fly and freshman Caden Bjornstad in the 100 Freestyle (3rd, 47.04). The Eagles added a third place finish in the final event of the afternoon with Pema, Thorsen, junior Logan D’Amore and senior Jeffrey de Groot registering a time of 3:07.31 in the 400 Freestyle Relay.

On the women’s side, freshman Emily Noll took second in the 200 Backstroke (2:05.88) to go along with her fifth place showing in the 200 Freestyle (1:57.40). Adding top-four efforts were sophomore Jada Chatoor in the 1000 Freestyle (4th, 10:45.63), Maki in the 100 Freestyle (4th, 53.76) and freshman Isabel Huang in the 200 Backstroke (4th, 2:06.06).

The Eagles return to the pool next Saturday, October 8th on the road at Queens University of Charlotte, starting at 11:00 AM.
