Four from Women's Swimming & Diving Honored as CSC Academic All-Americans

Four members of the Emory University women's swimming & diving program were selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America teams as announced by the organization Tuesday afternoon.

Seniors Sloane Donovan, Penelope Helm and Tess Klugherz were all chosen to the Academic All-America First Team with sophomore Isabel Huang being tabbed to the Third Team. It is the first career honor for Helm, Klugherz and Huang. For Donovan, this marks her second straight appearance on the organization's Academic All-America First Team.

The four selections bring Emory's total to seven Academic All-America for the 2023-24 athletic calendar, as the group joins Alana Dawson (volleyball), Colton Myers (men's soccer) and Claire Brock (women's basketball). The honors also raise the number of Academic All-Americans to 220 in the history of Emory University.

The CSC Academic All-America team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To be nominated, student-athletes must be a key member of their respective teams, maintain a 3.50 grade point average and be of sophomore standing or higher.

Donovan earned another spot on the First Team following her senior season that saw her collect CSCAA All-America Second Team honors in the 1,650 Freestyle. At the NCAA Championships, Donovan also competed in the 500 Freestyle where she placed 20th and in the 200 Freestyle, finishing 56th. At the UAA Championships in February, Donovan repeated as conference champion in the 1,650 Freestyle and earned All-UAA honors in the 500 Freestyle. As a Biology major, Sloane carries a 3.98 grade point average.

Helm was consistently one of the Eagles' top performers as a senior, capturing All-America honors in four different events to help the team finish sixth at the NCAA Championships. As an individual, Helm won bronze in the 200 Freestyle and took sixth in the 500 Freestyle. She was a member of the 800 Freestyle Relay that placed fourth and swam leadoff for the 400 Freestyle Relay that won the consolation final. At the UAA Championships, Helm was a runner-up in four events as she collected silver medals in the 500 Freestyle, 200 Freestyle, 800 Freestyle Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay. She also was the Eagles' top finisher in the 100 Freestyle, touching sixth at the conference meet. An Environmental Sciences major, Penelope carries a 3.93 GPA.

Klugherz capped off her diving career with one of her finest seasons to date. She became an All-American for the first time as she reached the podium with a third place effort in the 3-meter event in her final performance as an Eagle. Earlier in the season, Klugherz was Emory's top finisher at the UAA Championships as she placed fourth in the 1-meter and fifth in the 3-meter. At regionals, she was third in the 1-meter and 12th in the 3-meter. Klugherz owns a 3.98 GPA as she works to complete her degree in Biology.

Huang rounds out the Emory honorees as she excelled in her second season with the Eagles. At the NCAA Championships, Huang reached the podium in five events as she placed fifth in both the 100 and 200 Backstrokes, and helped the 800 Freestyle Relay, 200 Freestyle Relay and 400 Medley Relay finish in fourth, fifth and sixth positions. Furthermore, she was part of the 400 Freestyle Relay that won the consolation final and was 18th in the 200 IM. At the UAA Championships, Huang was the conference champion in the 200 IM, the runner-up in the 200 Backstroke, 800 Freestyle Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay, and earned bronze in the 100 Backstroke. Isabel carries a 3.83 GPA as an Economics major.
