EMORY'S MEREDITH VINCENT NAMED ITA REGIONAL ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEAR

(May 27) Emory University assistant women's tennis coach Meredith Vincent has been named the Women's Tennis Assistant Coach of the Year for the Atlantic South Region, by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

This season, Vincent helped lead Emory to a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Team Championships and to a 22-5 record overall.  In addition, she saw her players win the NCAA singles tournament, and the ITA Fall Regional singles and doubles championships.

During Vincent's three years with the Eagles, Emory has advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals twice and won three University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships.  She has coached her players to 13 all-America honors and 24 all-UAA honors to date, while earning UAA Coaching Staff of the Year honors twice.

EMORY'S LORNE MCMANIGLE NOMINATED FOR THE HONDA DIVISION III ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD

(May 27) Lorne McManigle, of the Emory University women's tennis team, has been nominated as a candidate for the 2008-09 Division III Athlete of the Year, to be presented at the Collegiate Women Sports Awards in June.

McManigle was chosen as the Division III tennis representative, and will be one of 11 nominees selected, including Emory swimmer Liz Horvat.  Other nominees include Marie Borner of Bethel University (cross country), Liz Decima of Ohio Northern University (softball), Ashley Huston of Hardin-Simmons University (track and field), Hillary Klimowicz of the College of New Jersey (basketball), Susan Martin of Methodist University (golf), Lindsay McNamara of Bowdoin College (field hockey), Amanda Naeher of Messiah College (soccer), Jen Pritchard of Franklin and Marshall College (lacrosse) and Amber Thomas of Juniata College (volleyball).  Emory is the only school with two nominees for the award.

McManigle recently won the singles tournament at the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships, becoming just the second Eagle to do so.  The sophomore finished the season with a 25-10 record in singles matches, including a 12-2 mark in tournament play.  McManigle also went 23-6 in doubles matches during the year, including 16-3 when paired with teammate Zahra Dawson.  In the fall, McManigle earned all-America honors in both singles and doubles by winning the Fall ITA Regionals.  She helped the Eagles to a 22-5 record and a third-place finish at the Division III team championships.

McManigle will try to join former Eagle Mary Ellen Gordon as an Athlete of the Year honoree.  Gordon, a fellow women's tennis player, won the award for her performance during the 2003-04 season.

The Collegiate Women Sports Awards has completed its 33rd year and recognizes the top woman collegiate athlete in each of 11 sports in Divisions III as nominees for the Division III Athlete of the Year.  Divisions III athletes are nominated by national coaches associations for each of the 11 sports:  basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, track and field and volleyball.  The athletes are placed on ballots emailed to all Division III Senior Women Administrators in June every year and the Athlete of the Year is determined by the outcome of the voting.

The awards program is sponsored by American Honda Motor Co., Inc. and to celebrate these awards American Honda Motor Co., Inc. donates $1,000 to the women's athletic fund of each Honda Sports Award nominee's university and each Division III nominee's university.  The Division III winner's institutions receive $5,000 each.

A press conference will be held June 22, 2009 at Columbia University in New York City to announce and present The Divisions II and III Athletes of the Year along with the recipients of the Honda-Broderick Cup the Honda Inspiration Award.

EMORY'S LORNE MCMANIGLE WINS THE NCAA DIVISION III INDIVIDUAL WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

(May 24) Lorne McManigle became the second individual champion in the history of the Emory University women's tennis program, as the sophomore defeated Ploy Suthijindawong 6-2, 6-1 at the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships.

"It hasn't really set in yet," said McManigle after the match, "But, it feels great to bring the championship back to Emory.

McManigle, who entered the tournament as the fifth seed, was pitted against the unseeded Suthhijindawong of the College of St. Scholastica.

The first set was a back-and-forth affair through the first five games, with neither player able to break the other's serve.  Leading 3-2, McManigle took control of the match in the sixth game by breaking Suthijindawong's serve with a win after the first deuce.  She would then claim the first set, winning the next game after four deuces, followed by a victory after deuce point in the eighth game to break Suthijindawong's serve for the second time in the set.

McManigle carried the momentum from the first set into the second set, winning her serve in the first game before dropping the second.  However, McManigle played dominantly the rest of the way, winning five straight games to clinch the victory, including two service breaks of Suthijindawong.  McManigle did not have her serve broken throughout the match.

"I have never had a player with as much focus as Lorne," said Emory head coach Amy Bryant.  "She played everyone exactly right throughout the tournament."

McManigle becomes the second individual in Emory history to win the NCAA Division III Women's Championship, joining former Eagle Mary Ellen Gordon, who won the singles championship in both 2003 and 2004.  McManigle had the opportunity to earn the championship in front of a large number of Emory supporters, who made the trip up I-85 to Lawrenceville, Georgia, to see the title match.

Later today, on the other side of the country, Emory's Michael Goodwin will be competing for the NCAA Division III Men's Individual Championship.  Should he win, it would mark the 3rd time in NCAA Division III history that the men's and women's individual champion has come from the same school.  Principia's Toby Clark and Courtney Allen accomplished the feat in both 1985 and 1987.

With the conclusion of the NCAA Division III Championships, the 2008-09 season has ended for the Eagles.

MCMANIGLE WINS TWO ON SATURDAY TO ADVANCE TO THE NCAA DIII WOMEN'S TENNIS SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

(May 23) Fifth-seeded Lorne McManigle of Emory University clinched a spot in the NCAA Division III Women's Singles Championship Match with a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon.

McManigle opened the day with a thrilling three-set, upset victory over fourth-seeded Julia Browne from Tufts University.  After McManigle won the first set 6-3, Browne answered back with a 6-3 victory of her own to force a third and deciding set.  With the third set knotted at six apiece, McManigle would win the tiebreaker 7-3 to advance to the semfinal match.

McManigle was pitted against the College of New Jersey's Jackie Schtemberg in her semifinal match.  The Eagles' sophomore continued her hot streak, winning the first set 7-5, and the second set 6-3.

McManigle will compete for the NCAA Division III Singles Championship at noon on Sunday, at the Collins Hill Athletic Club in Lawrenceville, GA.  Should she win, she would become the first Emory singles champion in women's tennis since Mary Ellen Gordon in 2004.

McManigle will face Ploy Suthijindawong of the College of St. Scholastica in the championship match.  McManigle will enter the match with a record of 24-10, including five-consecutive victories, while Suthijindawong is 24-1 on the campaign.

Meanwhile, in yesterday's doubles tournament action, Emory's top doubles pair of juniors Tshema Nash and Sabra Rogers fell 6-3, 6-4 to the tournament's top seeded pairing of Siobhan Finicane and Olivia Muesse of Pomona-Pitzer College.

Tomorrow's action will conclude the 2008-09 season for the Emory women's tennis team.

MCMANIGLE ADVANCES TO THE NCAA SINGLES TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINALS

(May 22) Emory University's Lorne McManigle won her first two matches of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Singles Tournament, advancing to the quarterfinal round of the tournament on Saturday.

McManigle, the fifth seed of the tournament, won her match in the opening round against Rachael Miller of the University of Redlands, 6-2, 6-2.  She followed her first round victory with a straight-set 6-4, 6-2 victory over Victoria Aiello of Middlebury College in the second round.

While the first round of matches was played as scheduled at the Collins Hill Athletic Club in Lawrenceville, GA, the second round matches were moved indoors to the Racquet Club of the South to accommodate bad weather in the area after approximately a two-hour rain delay.

McManigle, a sophomore, will look to pick up an upset in the quarterfinals, as she will face off against Tufts University's Julia Browne, the fourth seed in the tournament.  Quarterfinal matches will begin on Saturday at 9:00 AM, followed by the semifinals for advancing players at 12:00 PM.  The singles tournament finals will be held at 12:00 PM on Sunday.

Also competing in the singles tournament for Emory was freshman Zahra Dawson, who fell 6-4, 7-6 to sixth seed Sarah D'Elia of Bowdoin College in the first round.

Emory's top pairing of juniors Tshema Nash and Sabra Rogers will be competing in the doubles tournament on Friday as well, facing the top-seeded pair from Pomona-Pitzer College of Siobhan Finicane and Olivia Muesse.  The meeting is a familiar one between the two doubles teams, which met in the first round of the 2008 tournament, with the unseeded pair from Emory upsetting the then-top seeded doubles team 6-2, 6-4.  Earlier this week in the team tournament, Nash and Rogers fell to Finicane and Muesse 9-7 in the first-doubles match.

Click here to follow the live scoring of the doubles competition.  **Note: While the doubles matches were scheduled for a 3:00 PM start on Friday, it has been pushed back due to the rain delay.**

EAGLES FINISH THIRD AT NCAA DIVISION III WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

(May 21) With a 5-1 win over the fourth-ranked University of Chicago on Thursday, Emory University clinched third place at the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Team Championships in Lawrenceville, GA.

Thursday's match was a familiar scene for the two University Athletic Association (UAA) teams, who had met twice already during the season.  During the Fab Five Tournament on March 29th, the Eagles defeated the Maroons 5-4 in Atlanta, GA.  Emory also defeated Chicago 5-4 during the semifinals of the conference tournament on April 25th.

Less than a month removed from the last meeting, Emory took a 2-1 during the doubles portion of the match.  For the third time this season, the Eagles' second doubles team of sophomore Lorne McManigle and freshman Zahra Dawson defeated their Chicago counterparts, winning 8-2 over Jennifer Kung and Vindya Dayananda.  Junior all-Americans Tshema Nash and Sabra Rogers added a point with a 9-7 victory over Kendra Higgins and Chrissy Hu in the first doubles match.  Chicago would answer with an 8-6 win from Carmen VacaGuzman and Tiffany Nguyen over Emory's Daniela Schechter and Sara Vrabec in the third doubles match.

In singles play, Emory sophomore Lindsay Reidenbach struck the first blow, defeating Chrissy Hu 6-2, 6-0 in the fourth-singles match, bouncing back from her first singles defeat since February 21st in yesterday's match against Williams College.  Schechter, a freshman, put the Eagles a point away from victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the fifth singles match against Chicago's Vindya Dayananda.  Dawson would clinch the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win in her second singles contest to secure the national third-place finish for Emory.

The Eagles have now finished third in the Nation or better nine times in the program's history, including seven times in the last nine years.

Thursday's match ends team competition for the Eagles in the 2009 season.  The Eagles finished the year with a 22-5 record, the most wins by an Emory team since the 2004 campaign, and the second-best win total in school history.  Chicago dropped to 17-6 on the season with the loss.

Starting on Thursday, McManigle and Dawson will be competing in the NCAA Singles Championships, while Nash and Rogers will take part in the doubles competition.  In addition, McManigle and Dawson are the first-alternate team to the doubles bracket, and would compete if a team were to drop out.  The singles and doubles brackets will be announced by 5:00 PM on Thursday, on the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship website.

THIRD-RANKED EAGLES FALL TO #2 WILLIAMS COLLEGE AT NCAA TOURNAMENT

(May 20) Emory University fell out of contention for the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship on Wednesday, as the third-ranked Eagles suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of second-ranked Williams College.

The Eagles were behind from the start, dropping all three of their doubles matches.  In the first-doubles match, the Atlantic South Region's top-ranked pairing of Emory's Tshema Nash and Sabra Rogers fell 8-4 to Williams' Cary Gibson and Nicole Reich, ranked third in the Northeast region.  The story was the same for Emory's Lorne McManigle and Zahra Dawson, who lost to Grace Baljon and Taylor French, 8-6.  Rounding out doubles play, Sara Vrabec and Daniela Schechter dropped an 8-5 decision to Annie Hancock and Kirstin Alotta.

Emory was unable to pick up any momentum in the singles matches, with Dawson falling 6-4, 6-4 in the second singles match to Cary Gibson, and Lindsay Reidenbach dropping her fourth singles match, 6-4, 6-1, to Kristin Alotta.  The loss for Reidenbach ended a 20-match winning streak for the sophomore.

The rest of the singles matches were left unfinished, with McManigle up a set in the first-singles match and Kirsten Hillock leading her sixth singles contest, while Nash and Schechter trailed by a set in their third and fifth singles matches, respectively.

Emory dropped to 21-5 on the season with the loss, while Williams improved to 20-2 and will advance to the NCAA Championship match.  The two teams have now met four times in the NCAA Championships, with the winner in the previous three matches eventually winning the NCAA Title.

Emory will play for third place at the NCAA Championships at 9:00 AM on Thursday, facing the loser of the University of Chicago - Amherst College match, to be played later today.

#3 EMORY ADVANCES TO NCAA SEMIFINALS WITH A 5-1 WIN OVER SEVENTH-SEEDED POMONA-PITZER

(May 19) For the 10th time in school history, the Emory University women's tennis team has advanced to the NCAA Division III semifinals, as the third-ranked Eagles defeated the seventh-ranked Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer College 5-1 during the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Playing at the Collins Hill Athletic Club in nearby Lawrenceville, GA, the Eagles looked particularly strong in the first match of the day at the championships. Emory improved to 21-4 with the win, its 16th in the last 17 contests, while Pomona-Pitzer ended its season with an 18-5 record.

Emory's second-doubles team of sophomore Lorne McManigle and freshman Zahra Dawson, ranked fifth in the Atlantic South Region, set the tone for the Eagles, claiming the first point of the day with an 8-3 win over their counterparts, Rebecca Lange and Kasyn Stevenson, ranked 13th in the West Region.  That was followed by a 9-7 win in the third-doubles match for Emory's duo of junior Sara Vrabec and freshman Daniela Schechter, over Lindsay Clough and Kristin Holsted.

Dawson and McManigle improved to 15-2 on the season with their seventh-consecutive win, while Schechter and Vrabec earned the win in their first match together this season.

In a meeting of the top-ranked doubles teams in the Atlantic South and West regions, Emory junior Tshema Nash and Sabra Rogers suffered a hard-fought 9-7 defeat to Siobhan Finicane and Oliva Muesse, putting the score at 2-1 heading into the singles matches.  Rogers and Nash fell to 12-12 on the year with the loss.

Dawson was also the first Emory singles player to finish, as the region's sixth-ranked player won the second-singles contest 6-3, 6-0 over her regionally sixth-ranked counterpart, Lange, to put Emory on top 3-1.  A fifth singles victory from Schechter (6-1, 6-2) put the Eagles a match away from clinching.  Fourth-singles player Lindsay Reidenbach would do just that, winning her 20th-consecutive match by a 6-3, 6-2 score to give Emory a berth into the semifinals.

Nash and Hillock each led one set to none in their matches (third- and sixth-singles, respectively), and first-singles player McManigle trailed one set to none, when the match was stopped once the Eagles won.

This year will mark Emory's first trip to the semifinals since the 2006 season, when the Eagles won the NCAA Division III Championship.

The Eagles will play their semifinal match against second-seeded Williams College, which squeaked out a 5-4 victory over Denison, on Wednesday at 9:00 AM. The Eagles fell to the Ephs, the reigning National Champion, 5-4 earlier in the season.

This will be the fourth NCAA Tournament meeting between the two Division III women's tennis powerhouses. Williams defeated Emory 6-3 in both the semfinal round (en route to a National Championship) in 2001 and the finals in 2002. The Eagles got over the hump with a 6-3 win of their own during the 2003 semifinals, starting a string of four-consecutive National Championships for Emory.

#3 EMORY WOMEN'S TENNIS TO FACE POMONA-PITZER AT THE NCAA DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIPS

(May 15) The third-seeded Emory University women's tennis team will take on seventh-seeded Pomona-Pitzer College in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Championships.  The two squads will face off at 9:00 AM on Tuesday, May 19th in Lawrenceville, GA.

Emory currently stands at 20-4 this season, while Pomona-Pitzer holds an 18-4 record.

Should the Eagles win, they will face the winner of the match between second-seeded Williams College and Denison University in the semifinal match on May 20th at 9:00 PM.  The National Championship match will be held on May 21st at 1:00 PM.

In addition to the team championships, Lorne McManigle and Zahra Dawson are scheduled to compete in the singles championships, while Tshema Nash and Sabra Rogers are entered in the doubles bracket, from May 22nd-24th.  McManigle and Dawson are also the first doubles alternates, should a team in the bracket drop out.

The NCAA Division III Women's Championships are hosted by Oglethorpe University and the Gwinnett Sports Commission, and will be held at the Collins Hill Athletic Club in Lawrenceville, GA.

THIRD-RANKED EMORY ADVANCES TO THE NCAA QUARTERFINALS WITH A 5-2 WIN OVER FIFTH-RANKED WASHINGTON & LEE

(May 11) Third-ranked Emory University clinched a spot in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships with a 5-2 win over fifth-ranked Washington and Lee University on Sunday.

In the first match of the tournament between two teams seeded in the top five, Emory fell behind in the early going to the underdog Generals, as the Eagles' second doubles team of Lorne McManigle and Zahra Dawson earned the team's  only doubles point with an 8-3 win over their counterparts.

Down 2-1 and needed to win four of the six singles matches to avoid elimination, Emory's players responded.  Emory senior Tshema Nash won 6-2, 6-2 in the third-singles match, followed by a 6-1, 6-1 win for Lindsay Reidenbach in the fourth contest, and a 6-3, 6-2 victory for freshman Daniela Schechter in the fifth-singles match.  Dawson won her second-singles match 7-5, 0-6, 6-1 over Ellen Yeatman to clinch the win for Emory.  The first and sixth singles contests were not finished after the Eagles clinched.

Dawson and McManigle continued their impressive doubles play, winning their sixth-consecutive match and improving to a team-best 14-2 overall this year.  Dawson, a freshman, has also won five-straight singles matches, and is 21-7 this season.  Reidenbach, a sophomore, has not lost in 19-straight matches and is 22-3 on the campaign, while Schechter is now 11-3 in singles contest.

It marks the 20th time in the history of the program that the team has advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, and the ninth time in the last 10 years.

The Eagles improved to 2-0 this season against the Generals, after having previously beaten Washington and Lee on April 17th.  Emory not only had the challenge of facing a top-ranked team, but were also able to top the Generals on their home court in Lexington, VA.

Emory is now 11-2 this season against ranked Division III opponents and 20-4 overall, including wins in 15 of its last 16 matches (the team's only loss during the streak was a 5-4 defeat to top-ranked Williams College).  Washington and Lee finished its season 20-5.

FOUR EAGLES SELECTED TO COMPETE AT THE NCAA DIVISION III WOMEN'S TENNIS SINGLES AND DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIPS

(May 7) Emory University sophomore Lorne McManigle and freshman Zahra Dawson were selected to the field of 32 players at the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Singles Championships, while the Eagles' pairing of juniors Tshema Nash and Sabra Rogers were selected as one of the 16 teams in the doubles bracket.

In addition, Dawson and McManigle are the first alternate pairing to the doubles bracket.  Should one of the 16 doubles teams selected be unable to compete, Dawson and McManigle would be the first team selected to fill the spot.

Emory is one of seven schools that had multiple players selected to the singles championship.  The Eagles are the only team to have a doubles qualifier and an alternate.  No school has two pairings selected for the doubles tournament.

McManigle is the second-ranked player in the Atlantic South Region, according to the latest Campbell's/ ITA Division III poll.  She has recorded a 19-10 overall record in singles play this year, including a mark of 12-8 in first-singles matches during the spring season.  McManigle has already earned all-America honors this year, finishing first in singles and doubles play at the Fall ITA Regional Tournament.

In her first year of collegiate competition, Dawson holds a 20-7 record, including wins in 11 of her last 12 matches.  Earlier in the season, she earned a nod to the all-University Athletic Association (UAA) first team as the second-singles player.  Dawson is currently the sixth-ranked singles player in the region.

Nash and Rogers, the top-ranked doubles team in the region, advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship last season.  This year, the pairing has a record of 11-10, including a 2-1 mark in the recent UAA Tournament.  Rogers has earned all-America honors in doubles play in each of her first three seasons on the team, while Nash was a doubles all-American last season.

McManigle and Dawson have gone 12-2 in doubles matches this season, and are currently ranked fifth in the region.  The duo went 3-0 as Emory's second-doubles team during the UAA Tournament, earning all-UAA first team honors.

The singles and doubles championships will be co-hosted by Oglethorpe University and the Gwinnett Sports Commission from May 22nd - 24th at the Collins Hill Athletic Club in Lawrenceville, GA.  The singles and doubles matches will follow the NCAA Division III team championships, which will be held from May 19th - 21st.

Emory, ranked third in Division III, will begin its NCAA Tournament run at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 9th in Lexington, VA, with the second round of the team tournament.  The Eagles, who received a first-round bye, will play the winner of Friday's match between Agnes Scott College and Grove City College.

EMORY WOMEN'S TENNIS SEEDED THIRD AT THE NCAA TOURNAMENT; WILL PLAY SATURDAY IN LEXINGTON, VA

(May 5) Emory University has been selected as the third seed in the NCAA Women's  Tennis Tournament, and will open play on Saturday, May 9th in Lexington, VA, after a first round bye.  The Eagles will face the winner of the first-round match between Agnes Scott College and Grove City College.

Emory received an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament after winning the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on April 26th.  This is the 25th-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the Eagles, who have won the National Championship in 1996, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.  Last season, Emory advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament, marking the 11th time in 13 seasons that the Eagles have won their regional bracket.

Also receiving a bye in Emory's regional bracket is the host school, Washington and Lee University, which is seeded fifth overall in the tournament.  The Generals' second-round match will be against the winner of the first-round contest between Meredith College and Gwynedd-Mercy College.  Should the Eagles win their second-round match on Saturday, they will face the winner of that match on Sunday, May 10th, for the right to move on to the NCAA quarterfinals.

Emory's path to the quarterfinals will be one of the more difficult in this year's tournament.  The Eagles, who enter the tournament as the third-ranked team in the latest Campbell's/ ITA Division III poll, are in one of only two regional brackets with two seeded teams.  Should the Eagles and the Generals each advance to the third round, it will be the earliest meeting in the entire national tournament between top-five seeded squads.  Emory will also have to defeat Washington and Lee on their home court.

Earlier in the season, Emory defeated Washington and Lee, then-ranked second in the nation, 6-3 on a neutral court in Spartanburg, SC.  The Eagles have not faced any other teams in their bracket this season.

Emory will enter the tournament with an 18-4 overall record, including a 15-2 record against Division III teams.  Emory has won 13 of its last 14 matches.

DAWSON HEADLINES FIVE EAGLES RECEIVING ALL-UAA WOMEN'S TENNIS HONORS

(Apr. 30) Following its 22nd-consecutive conference championship, five members of the Emory University women's tennis team were named to the all-University Athletic Association (UAA) team.  Freshman Zahra Dawson led the way with nods to the all-UAA first team as the Eagles' second-singles and second-doubles player.

Joining Dawson on the all-UAA first team were sophomores Lindsay Reidenbach as the fourth-singles player, and Lorne McManigle as Dawson's second-doubles teammate.  Junior Tshema Nash and freshman Daniela Schechter each earned all-UAA second team honors as Emory's third- and fifth-singles players, respectively.

Dawson recorded a perfect 3-0 record in her second-singles matches at the UAA Tournament, including a 6-4, 6-1 win over her counterpart from third-ranked Carnegie Mellon University to clinch the conference championship for Emory.  The all-UAA honor is the first of the freshman's career.

Dawson teamed with McManigle in doubles play, recording a 3-0 record as the Eagles' second doubles team.  The first team doubles honor was the second of McManigle's career.

Reidenbach extended her singles winning streak to 18 matches with a 3-0 record as the Eagles' fourth-singles player at the UAA Tournament.  The all-UAA honor is the first of her career.

Nash went 2-1 in singles matches at the tournament.  She has now earned all-UAA honors in singles play in all three years of competition.  Schechter went 2-1 in singles play, including a 1-1 mark as the Eagles' fifth-singles player, with her win coming in the championship match.

The Eagles, currently ranked fourth in the nation, await the release of the NCAA Division III Tournament bracket, scheduled for Monday, May 4th at 7:00 PM at NCAA.com.  The first rounds of the tournament will be held from Friday, May 8th - Sunday, May 10th.

FOURTH-RANKED EMORY WINS 22nd-CONSECUTIVE UAA WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 5-4 UPSET WIN OVER #3 CARNEGIE MELLON

(Apr. 26) The Emory University women's tennis team, ranked fourth in the nation, earned an upset win over third-ranked Carnegie Mellon University, 5-4, to win its 22nd-consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship.

Emory clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win for freshman Zahra Dawson in the second-singles match, giving the Eagles a 5-2 lead at the time, and making the final two singles contest irrelevant to the outcome of the match.  Emory also picked up wins in the fourth-singles match from Lindsay Reidenbach (6-1, 6-0) and the fifth-singles match from Daniela Schechter (6-1, 6-0).

Reidenbach has now won 18 consecutive singles matches, and is a team-best 21-3 this season.  Dawson won all three of her UAA matches, and is 20-7 on the season.

The Eagles took a 2-1 lead after doubles play.  Emory's first-doubles team of Tshema Nash and Sabra Rogers earned an 8-6 victory, while the second-doubles squad of Dawson and McManigle won 8-0.

Dawson and McManigle went 3-0 in doubles play at the UAA Championships, improving to 12-2 on the year, while Nash and Rogers finished the tournament with a 2-1 record.

"The girls were match-tough," said Emory head coach Amy Bryant.  "They did not give up.  The way we competed shows how far we have come during this season."

Emory has won the UAA Women's Tennis Championship every year of competition, one of the more impressive streaks in all of college sports, but the streak was in doubt after a 6-3 loss to Carnegie Mellon earlier in the season.  However, Emory avenged the loss with the win on Sunday, setting themselves up to likely be ranked second in the nation in the next Campbell's/ ITA Division III poll, and a strong contender for the NCAA Division III team title.

The Eagles have won 13 of their last 14 matches since the loss to Carnegie Mellon on March 1st.  Emory's only loss during the streak was a 5-4 defeat at the hands top-ranked Williams College.  Emory has defeated five teams ranked in the top-five in the nation this season.

The win raises Emory's record to 18-4 this season, while Carnegie Mellon fell to 19-2 with the loss.

The Eagles will now await the announcement of the NCAA Division III Tournament bracket, to find out who they will be playing in the regional rounds of postseason competition.

#4 EMORY COMES FROM BEHIND TO DEFEAT #5 CHICAGO; WILL PLAY #3 CARNEGIE MELLON FOR THE UAA CHAMPIONSHIP ON SUNDAY

(Apr. 25) The fourth-ranked Emory University women's tennis team trailed the fifth-ranked University of Chicago 2-1 after doubles play, but the Eagles claimed victory in four of the six singles matches to earn a 5-4 win over the Maroons.  With the win, Emory will advance to the UAA Championship match against third-ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday at 9:00 AM.

Emory's only win in doubles play came in a thrilling 9-8 (10-8) win in the second match from Zahra Dawson and Lorne McManigle.

In singles play, Emory would get wins in the second, fourth and sixth matches from Dawson, Lindsay Reidenbach and Kirsten Hillock, respectively, but lose in the first and fifth matches to even the score at 4-4 with one match left to be decided.  Emory all-American and third-singles play Tshema Nash would write the Eagles' ticket to the UAA Championship with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 come-from-behind win over her counterpart.

Emory improved to 17-4 on the season with the win, earning their second victory of the year over Chicago.  The Maroons fell to 13-5 on the season with the loss.

Emory will look to win its 22nd-consecutive UAA Championship on Sunday, as the Eagles will face Carnegie Mellon.  The Eagles suffered a 6-3 loss to the Tartans on March 1st of this season, in the finals of the ITA Indoor Championships.  Sunday's championship is scheduled for a 9:00 AM start at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.

The leading challenger to Emory's conference supremacy will be third-ranked and top-seeded Carnegie Mellon University, which defeated the Eagles 6-3 at the ITA Indoor Championship match.  Other strong contenders will be the fifth-ranked and third-seeded University of Chicago, which Emory defeated 5-4 on March 29th, and 14th-ranked and fourth-seeded Washington University (Mo.).

The Eagles will return five players who were named to the all-UAA team last season, including the UAA's Most Valuable Player, junior Tshema Nash.  Emory features a number of players ranked in singles play in the Atlantic South Region, including top-ranked sophomore Lorne McManigle, sixth-ranked Zahra Dawson, and Nash, ranked 14th.  The Eagles also feature two regionally-ranked doubles pairings - the second-ranked team of Nash and Sabra Rogers and the sixth-ranked team of McManigle and Dawson.

FOURTH-RANKED WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS JUST SHORT OF THE UPSET IN 5-4 LOSS TO #1 WILLIAMS

(Apr. 3) In a battle of two of the top-ranked NCAA Division III women's  tennis teams, fourth-ranked Emory University fell just short of an upset, losing 5-4 to top-ranked Williams College at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Friday.

Facing the reigning National Champions, the Eagles fought hard, taking one of the doubles matches, and splitting the singles contests.

Emory's Lorne McManigle and Zahra Dawson continued their hot streak, as the pair accounted for three of the team's four points.  The duo combined for an 8-4 win over their counterparts in the second doubles match.  Individually, McManigle earned a 7-5, 3-6, 10-7 win in the first singles match, while Dawson claimed a 6-0, 6-3 win in the second singles match.

Dawson has now won six-straight singles matches, improving to 15-6 overall this season, while McManigle raised her singles record to 15-8 on the campaign.  As a doubles team, the pair is 7-1 this season, including wins in each of their last four matches.

Emory's other doubles squads would falter during the match, however, as the Eagles' first doubles pairing of Tshema Nash and Sabra Rogers, and their third doubles team of Laura Callava and Lindsay Reidenbach each lost 8-5 decisions.

Needed to win four of the six singles matches to claim victory, Emory would get their fourth point of the contest from Lindsay Reidenbach, who earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over her fifth-singles counterpart from Williams.  The sophomore extended her singles winning streak to 12 matches with the victory, and is now 15-3 overall this season in singles play.

Emory's other singles players would fall short though, as Nash lost 6-1, 6-3 in the third singles match, Kirsten Hillock dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision in the fourth-singles contest, and sixth-singles player Laura Callava fell 6-1, 6-1.

The defeat drops Emory's record to 12-4 this season, while Williams remained perfect on the season, improving to 9-0.  The loss was just the Eagles' second of the season to a Division III squad.

SEVENTH-RANKED EMORY TENNIS UPSETS #4 CHICAGO; FINISHES PERFECT AT THE FAB FIVE TOURNAMENT

(Mar. 29) The Emory University women's tennis team, ranked seventh in the nation, capped off a perfect week at the Fab Five Tournament, recording their second-straight upset victory with a 5-4 defeat over the fourth-ranked University of Chicago.  Emory finishes the tournament, which featured a number of the top-ranked teams in Division III, with a 5-0 record.

Freshman Zahra Dawson continued her amazing run against some of the top players in Division III, winning her second-singles match 6-0, 7-6 (7-4), and teaming with sophomore Lorne McManigle to win their second-doubles match 9-8 (9-7).  Dawson finished the tournament with a 5-0 record in singles play, and 4-1 in doubles action.

The Eagles took two of the three doubles matches, with the first-singles combination of junior Tshema Nash and Sabra Rogers winning 8-1 over their Chicago counterparts.  However, juniors Kirsten Hillock and Sara Vrabec suffered a 8-6 loss in the third-doubles match, narrowing the Emory lead to 2-1 heading into singles play.

The Eagles fell behind in singles play, as McManigle dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision at first singles, Nash fell 6-2, 7-5 at the third-singles match, and Hillock lost 6-2, 6-2 in fourth singles.  However, along with Dawson's victory, sophomore Lindsay Reidenbach evened the match at 4-4 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at fifth singles.

Callava was a late addition to the lineup for Emory, after coach Amy Bryant made the decision to go with the freshman in the sixth-singles match, instead of Sara Vrabec, who had played there in each of the previous three Emory victories.  The move paid off for Bryant and the Eagles, as Callava improved to 8-1 in singles play this season, including a perfect 5-0 in dual matches.

Callava and Dawson were just a few of the Eagles to record impressive weeks.  Reidenbach finished the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record as a fourth- and fifth-singles player.  Meanwhile, McManigle and Hillock each went 3-1 in singles play.  As a team, Emory went 21-4 in singles matches, and 10-5 in doubles play.

NO. FIVE EMORY DEFEATED BY EIGHTH-RANKED CARNEGIE MELLON IN ITA INDOOR FINALS

(Mar. 1) Emory University's run at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Women's Indoor Championship came to an end on Sunday, as the fifth-ranked Eagles were defeated by eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University 6-3, in the title match.  Emory's performance during the weekend earned the squad a second-place finish at the tournament.

The Eagles dug themselves an early hole in doubles play that they were never able to climb out of, dropping all three of the pairings.  The Eagles' first-doubles team of Tshema Nash and Sabra Rogers fell 8-5, while their second-doubles squad of Kirsten Hillock and Zahra Dawson and the third-doubles pairing of Lorne McManigle and Sara Vrabec each lost 8-4.

After Nash lost her third-singles match 6-3, 6-1, the Eagles were left without a margin of error, but McManigle kept hope alive with a 6-1, 6-3 win in the first-singles match, as did Hillock with a 6-4, 7-5 win in the fifth-singles contest.

However, the Tartans officially clinched the indoor title with Amanda Wu's 6-4, 6-1 victory over Zahra Dawson in the second-singles match.  The Eagles would get a 7-6, 6-2 win from Lindsay Reidenbach in the fifth-singles match, but it would be too little too late for Emory.

The loss is Emory's first of the season to a Division III squad, dropping the team to 5-3 overall on the campaign.  Carnegie improved to 9-0 with the win.

Sunday's loss to Carnegie Mellon sets up an interesting scenario between the two squads, which will unfold later in the season.  Emory has won ever University Athletic Association (UAA) Women's Tennis Championship in the 21 years of conference competition.  However, after Sunday's match, Carnegie Mellon, another UAA institution, has set the stage for an exciting conference tournament in late April.

The Eagles will look to regroup next weekend, when they will face Swarthmore College at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Saturday, March 7th at 10:00 AM.

Emory's lone loss in singles play came from the fourth singles spot, where Hillock suffered a 6-1, 6-2 defeat, marking her first singles loss of the spring season.

NO. FIVE EMORY WOMEN'S TENNIS TO OPEN ITS SPRING 2009 SEASON ON TUESDAY

(Feb. 9) The fifth-ranked Emory University women's tennis team will open its 2009 spring season this week, starting with a home match against Spelman College on Tuesday at 4:00 PM.

The Eagles will enter the 2009 season looking for their 22nd-consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, and the team's 25th-consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament.  The Emory women's tennis team has won five NCAA Division III Championships, most recently during the 2006 season.

"I expect a lot of great things from the team this year," said Emory Head Coach Amy Bryant.  "They are very hungry.  It has been a couple of years since they have been in the final four, and they want to get there... and they are willing to put in the work to get there."

In the fall portion of the team's schedule, Emory saw two of its players earn all-America honors.  Sophomore Lorne McManigle claimed the singles title at the Wilson/ ITA Fall Regional Tournament, eventually finishing sixth in the National tournament.  McManigle also teamed with junior Sabra Rogers to win the ITA Regional doubles tournament, as the pairing claimed a seventh-place finish at the national level.

The Eagles will bring back a number of strong players from the 2008 team that advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament.  Junior co-captains Tshema Nash and Sabra Rogers will anchor the team following multiple all-America honors in 2008.  In addition, McManigle and junior Sara Vrabec have each earned all-America honors over their careers, and will strengthen the Emory lineup.  Junior Kirsten Hillock will look to continue her successful career following an all-UAA first team honor last season, while senior co-captain Jenny Moscato, and sophomores Kelsey Krzyston and Emily Wein will provide the Eagles' roster with depth and experience.

Emory will also add a number of newcomers to the roster for the upcoming season.  Zahra Dawson looks to be one of the more impactful freshmen in Division III this season, following her second-place finish at the Fall Regionals.  Sophomore Lindsay Reidenbach will be a factor for the Eagles as well, after transferring from Samford University at the start of the year.  Freshman Laura Callava, Shikha Jerath, and Daniela Schechter will also see playing time in 2009, rounding out a very talented Emory roster from top to bottom.

"We have three or four juniors that will be in the lineup again that are all third-year players.  We have a transfer that has come in this year that has added a good dimension," said Bryant.  "We also have a couple of freshmen that have a really good shot at playing in the lineup, one at the top.  That is really exciting because it adds some competition at the top of the lineup for us."

Emory features six singles players ranked in the top-25 in the region, headlined by second-ranked McManigle.  Other top-25 Emory players include fourth-ranked Dawson, ninth-ranked Hillock, 15th-ranked Schechter, 18th-ranked Callava, and 20th-ranked sophomore Reidenbach.

The Eagles also feature four of the top-seven doubles teams in the region, including the second-ranked pairing of McManigle and Rogers.  The other ranked Emory teams include the fourth-ranked combo of Vrabec and Reidenbach, sixth-ranked Schechter and Dawson, and seventh-ranked Hillock and Jenny Moscato.

Not featured in the rankings for Emory is junior and two-time all-American Tshema Nash, who ended the 2008 season ranked fifth in the Atlantic South Region in singles play, and first in doubles.  Nash missed the fall portion of the 2008-09 campaign due to injury.

Following their season-opening match against Spelman on Tuesday, the Eagles will face NAIA institutions Shorter College and Berry College in Rome, GA on Saturday, February 14th.  Later in the season, the Eagles will take part in the ITA National Indoor Tournament in St. Peter, MN, from February 27th through March 1st.  Emory will also host 11 of the best Division III women's tennis teams to Atlanta, GA for the Fab Five Tournament from March 23rd through the 29th.

From April 24th-26th, the Eagles will travel to Brandeis University in Waltham, MA, where they will look to defend their 21-consecutive conference championships at the UAA Championships.  This season looks to bring tougher competition than past seasons, according to Head Coach Amy Bryant.

"The UAA is going to be extremely tough this year," said Bryant.  "We're excited to have some really good competition there.  We're going to have to work hard to make sure we come out on top again for the 22nd year in a row."

Emory's ultimate goal of a National Championship will begin on May 8th with the NCAA Regional Tournament.  Should the Eagles win the regional round, they will advance to the NCAA Division III Championships at the Collins Hill Athletic Club in Lawrenceville, GA from May 19th-24th.
