#4 Eagles Upset Third-Ranked Washington & Lee

The fourth-ranked Emory University women's tennis team upset third-ranked Washington and Lee University on their home court on Saturday, as the Eagles earned a 5-2 win over the Generals to wrap up play at the Fab 5 Tournament in Lexington, VA.

Emory claimed victories in each of the top-two doubles matches, with senior Zahra Dawson and sophomore Gabrielle Clark defeating Washington & Lee's pairing of Trelsie Sadler and Jen Snyder in first doubles, 8-1.  In second doubles, Emory sophomores Brenna Kelly and Malavika Padmanabhan claimed an 8-3 win over Lauren Lukas and Meghan Buell.  The Eagles only doubles loss came in the third match, where freshman Catharine Harris and junior Jordan Wylie fell to Patricia Kirkland and Cameron Dorsey, 8-3.

Emory would quickly clinch a match victory in singles play.  Sophomore Taylor Brandt got the Eagles off to a good start with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sadler in fifth singles.  In third singles, Dawson battled to a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lindsey Burke.  Wylie then secured the match win for Emory with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Snyder in second singles.

With the match decided, freshman Lauren Pinsky fell in a thrilling third-set tiebreaker to Allison Hupalo, 6-4, 4-6, 15-13.  The final two matches were stopped due to time constrictions after play was moved indoors for weather.  At the time the matches were stopped Clark was leading Lukas after one set 6-2 in first singles and Padmanabhan was trailing Kirkland 6-2 after one set in fourth singles.

Emory has won eight of its last nine matches, improving to 8-3 overall on the season.  Washington and Lee dropped to 14-4 on the year with the loss.  The Generals recently jumped the Eagles in the latest ITATennis.com Division III poll.

The Eagles will hit the courts again on Thursday, March 29th, traveling to Sewanee, Tennessee to face the University of the South at 3:30 PM.
