No.-1 Eagles Celebrate Senior Day with 8-1 Win over No.-13 Washington & Lee

The Emory University Women's Tennis team celebrated Senior Day with an 8-1 victory over 13th-ranked Washington and Lee University Tuesday night at the Woodruff PE Center.

Prior to the start of the match, the Eagles recognized the graduating class of 2017 of Paula Castro, Michelle DeMeo, Melissa Goodman, Michelle Satterfield and Katarina Su with a special pre-match ceremony.

The Eagles took two of the three doubles matches against the Generals to lead off the evening. On court one, Su and junior Bridget Harding were victorious in a matchup of the top-two doubles teams in the Atlantic South region, defeating Brooke Donnelly and Tessa Hill, 8-4. Castro and DeMeo posted an identical 8-4 victory as they topped Mary Hampton McNeal and Anna Kreynin on court three. Satterfield and sophomore Daniela Lopez saw their nine-match winning streak snapped on court two, falling to Michelle Fleenor and Lauren Hassell, 9-8 (3).

In singles, four of the five-member senior class picked up wins as Emory put the match away, sweeping all six matches. Satterfield, Goodman and Su were all triumphant in straight sets while Castro needed to rally for the win after dropping the first set. Satterfield knocked off Hill at second singles 6-2, 6-2 for her 18th win of the season. At fourth singles, Su also recorded her 18th win of the year, besting Hannah Archer 6-1, 6-0. At fifth singles, Goodman cruised past McNeal 6-2, 6-0 and at sixth singles, Castro closed out Emily Kochard 6-1, 10-6 after dropping the first set 7-6 (7).

Harding and Lopez rounded out the match, winning both of their matches in three sets. Harding beat Donnelly 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 on court one in a match that featured the top two players in the region while Lopez came from behind to defeat Fleenor 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 at third singles.

The Eagles will be back in action Thursday morning at they face the University of Rochester in the opening round of the 2017 University Athletic Association Championships in Altamonte Springs, Florida. First serve is scheduled for 9:00 AM.
