Women's Tennis Falls to Penn State at Home

The Emory University women's tennis team faced off against Penn State University for four hours Thursday afternoon, falling to the Nittany Lions by a 6-3 count on the indoor courts of the WoodPEC in Atlanta, GA.

The match opened with several competitive matches in the doubles competition with the Eagles claiming one of three matches. The freshmen tandem of Katelyn Thomas and Alexa Goetz continued their unblemished spring, winning their seventh straight decision as they were 8-4 winners on court three. At first doubles, junior Stephanie Taylor and sophomore Christina Watson fell by an identical score while junior Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and sophomore Jessica Fatemi were slighted by an 8-6 margin.

In singles play, PSU secured four of the six matches to clinch the win. For Emory, Gonzalez-Rico and sophomore Emma Cartledge scored victories with both coming via straight sets. Gonzalez-Rico defeated Gabby O'Gorman at first singles 7-5, 6-1 with Cartledge following with a 7-6 (6), 6-4 win on court five.

Other closely contested singles matches came on courts two and six where both needed third set tie breakers to determine winners. At second singles, Penn State's Frederikke Svarre edged out junior Defne Olcay 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 (3) and on court six, Fatemi won her first set 6-4 before falling to Gracey Hirsch 6-1 in the second. In the super tiebreaker, Hirsch came away with the 14-12 advantage to seal the match win.

The Eagles now travel to Melbourne, FL for their spring break trip where they will take on top-10 teams in No. 5 Carnegie Mellon (Mar. 10) and No. 2 Wesleyan University (Mar. 12).
