Emory Women's Tennis 2020 Season Recap

Emory Women's Tennis 2020 Season Recap

The Emory University women's tennis team was in the middle of its spring break trip when news came in that the remaining portion of its 2020 spring schedule would be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Eagles, off to a 6-3 start in dual matches, saw all remaining matches cancelled including the UAA and NCAA Championships. Emory was ranked third in the final edition of the ITA national rankings.

Head Coach Amy Bryant reflected on her team's abbreviated season with a video message found here: https://emoryathletics.com/sports/wten/2019-20/videos/20200529-a2m6tpca and a written passage found here: https://emoryathletics.com/sports/wten/2019-20/releases/20200319jbm1tk.

Despite the shortened season, the Eagles still cashed in with postseason awards. Five members of the team were chosen as ITA All-Americans with freshman Alexa Goetz and junior Defne Olcay being tabbed as All-Americans in both singles and doubles. Junior Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico added All-America honors in singles for the third straight season while sophomores Emma Cartledge and Christina Watson both collected All-America certificates in doubles.

In addition to the ITA All-America acclaim, six Eagles earned All-University Athletic Association annals. Four players were selected for their play in singles: Gonzalez-Rico, Watson, Cartledge and Goetz, and in doubles, two tandems were picked for All-UAA acclaim with No.-1 doubles duo Watson and junior Stephanie Taylor as well as the No.-3 doubles team featuring Goetz and classmate Katelyn Thomas.

Goetz rounded out the Eagles taking home postseason hardware as she was tabbed the ITA Atlantic South region's Rookie of the Year. Goetz led the Eagles in both singles (15) and doubles (16) victories and highlighted the team at the ITA South Region championship in the fall.

Goetz led the Emory-dominated regional tournament as she captured the singles title and teamed with Watson to win the doubles draw. Goetz edged out Cartledge in the singles championship match while Goetz/Watson knocked off Cartledge and Olcay in the doubles championship. In all, 10 Eagles were among the final 16 competitors in the singles bracket and in doubles, Emory occupied five of eight remaining tandems including an all-Eagle final four in both competitions.

Another highlight for Emory came during the final week of February when Amy Bryant's squad reached the ITA National Indoor Championship title match for a fourth consecutive season. The Eagles cruised through the first two rounds of the tournament, defeating Brandeis and Pomona-Pitzer by an 8-1 margin. The two wins set up a rematch of the 2019 national indoor championship with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, however the Athenas would deny Emory a fourth straight indoor championship, edging the Eagles 5-4 in a grueling four-hour match.

Emory closed out the season with two wins over its final three matches, picking up triumphs over Carnegie Mellon and Division I's Lehigh University down in Melbourne, FL. In total, the Eagles were 4-1 against Division III foes and 2-2 against teams from other divisions.
