Watson to Play for NCAA DIII Singles National Title; Both Doubles Teams Advance to National Semifinals

Emory University junior Christina Watson will play for the NCAA Division III National Championship in singles on Sunday as she highlighted four women's tennis players in action Saturday afternoon in Chattanooga, TN.

Watson will face off against Williams' Erica Ekstrand in the national championship match at 12:00 PM EST at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, TN. Watson advanced to the finals following two straight set wins against Bethel's Grace Reirmann (6-0, 6-2) and UT-Dallas' Kathy Joseph (6-1, 6-2).

Ekstrand reached the national championship match after defeating Tufts' Tilly Rigby (6-3, 7-5) in the quarterfinals and then besting Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico (6-1, 6-2) in the semifinals. After a full day of action on Friday, Gonzalez-Rico won her first match of the day over CNU's Reagan Delp, 6-4, 6-1, before seeing her run end against Eckstrand in the semifinals Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles' strong play continued in doubles as both pairings reached the semifinals following wins late Saturday afternoon. Gonzalez-Rico and Katie Chang remained perfect on the season, moving to 14-0 with their quarterfinals win over St. Thomas' Nicole Snezhko and Jannah El Namr, 6-2, 6-3, while Watson and Stephanie Taylor needed three sets to advance over Amherst's Jackie Bukzin and Julia Lendel, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-4.

The semifinals of the doubles draw is scheduled to begin after the conclusion of the singles championship on Sunday, not before 1:30 PM. Gonzalez-Rico and Chang will be matched up against UT-Dallas' Joseph and Sam Wong with Taylor and Watson going against Bethel's combo of Grace and Maggie Reirmann.

Should both doubles teams advance, the national championship will take place after 3:00 PM EST. Fans can follow the action with links found on the tournament webpage: https://sewaneetigers.com/tournaments/tennis/2020-21/index.
