Women's Tennis Tops CMS, 6-3, to Advance to ITA National Indoor Championship Match

The Emory University women's tennis team advanced to the finals of the ITA National Indoors Championship with its 6-3 win on Saturday over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

It will be the fifth consecutive time the Eagles will play for the ITA National Indoors title and will oppose fellow University Athletic Association member, UChicago, in Sunday's championship match. Chicago defeated Pomona-Pitzer, 5-4, in the other semifinal match on Saturday.

The Eagles doubles teams went 2-1 to get the day started. Freshman Eliza McPherron and senior Jessica Fatemi cruised to an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles while a much closer match was played at No. 2 doubles by senior Christina Watson and sophomore Ana Cristina Perez but they too emerged victorious, rallying to win their match 8-7. Sophomore Xuanjin Li and senior Emma Cartledge dropped their doubles match in the first position by a score of 8-2.

In singles play, the Eagles went 4-2 with four of the six matches ending in a third set. In the third position Cartledge defeated her opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 while at No. 5 singles Fatemi fell 5-7, 4-6. At No. 1 singles, McPherron dropped the first set before rallying back for a convincing 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 three set victory. Perez (6-3, 2-6, 6-5) and junior Alexa Goetz (6-3, 3-6, 6-4) each won the first set before dropping the second set and then gutted out tight wins in the third set of their matches. Watson fell at No. 2 singles by a score of 3-6, 7-6, 5-6 but the Eagles still emerged with an overall match score of 6-3 to advance to the finals.

The ITA National Indoors championship match is set for tomorrow in Danville, KY with the match not starting until after 10:30 AM at the earliest.
